POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto, St. George campus invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Economics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have earned a PhD in Economics by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching Economics. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate must be able to teach in a wide range of courses in the undergraduate program from large-enrollment, program-required courses within our introductory and intermediate economics sequences, to upper-year undergraduate courses within the candidate’s scholarship areas. We are looking for enthusiastic and innovative individuals pursuing an award-winning career in university teaching, with the demonstrated ability to enhance the domestic and international reputation of our undergraduate programs.
The successful candidate must present clear evidence of: excellence in teaching in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and design of lecture materials and assessments; a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices; a demonstrated commitment in teaching-related scholarly activities; good judgement and a reflective approach to teaching innovation; the demonstrated capacity to expertly incorporate current research from at least two sub-fields within economics into our undergraduate courses; and excellent expository, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues on our courses and programs.
Evidence of the above criteria requires: a creative and coherent teaching dossier that highlights teaching accomplishments, including a thoughtful and compelling teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations; publications and/or working papers in the candidate’s field of specialization; and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. Evidence may also include professional experiences that enhance teaching, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application. The teaching dossier, a candidate’s papers, and letters of reference should give evidence of excellent expository, organizational, and interpersonal skills and the requisite expertise in at least two sub-fields within economics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load. Teaching duties are focused on courses in the undergraduate programs of the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto, St. George campus. These courses may include program-required courses at the first and/or second year level, as well as upper-year undergraduate courses. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the broader Economics community at the University of Toronto through service and administrative activities, and through active participation in teaching and learning workshops, conferences, and mentoring.
HIRING SALARY RANGE
The salary range is $150,000-$180,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
