About Us

Home to over 40 departments and institutes, the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine lies at the heart of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network and is a global leader in ground-breaking research and education, spanning clinical medicine, basic science and the rehabilitation sciences sectors.

Your Opportunity

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research, Innovation & Health Science Education (VDRIHSE) oversees all research undertaken for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and coordinates with its counterparts at the affiliated hospital research institutes for clinical research. This includes grant proposal development, administering internal funding allocations, collecting and reporting on research productivity metrics, and managing core research facilities.

As Manager, Core Research Operations, you will support all aspects of research operational management, development, and administration for the core facilities within the VDRIHSE. Reporting to the Director and working closely with the core facility academic leads, you will drive initiatives to maximize research funding opportunities for sustainability, oversee daily unit operations, and supervise technical and research operations teams while ensuring that core facilities spaces are appropriately allocated for maximum operational efficiency. Additionally, you will shape the future of the core units by creating short- and long-term strategic plans and launching continuous improvement initiatives that drive service excellence and financial sustainability. This includes partnering with peer facilities (Division of Comparative Medicine) and associated TAHSN-wide core service delivery units to uncover new funding streams and champion opportunities for strategic partnership and service consolidation.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience in a research administration and operations role in a University or hospital research institute.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing research operations, including financial management, resource allocation and human resources management.
  • Prior research managerial experience in a basic research institute required, along with experience supporting core research facilities.
  • Experience managing and reporting on research funds including infrastructure grants.
  • Experience leading, and supervising high-functioning teams, with a strong preference for candidates who have successfully led staff and interpreted collective agreements within a unionized environment using established HR policies and procedures.
  • Experience supporting end-to-end grant lifecycles, from pre-award proposal development for multi-site grants to post-award milestone and financial reporting for major federal, provincial and institutional awards.
  • Experience overseeing facility health and safety programs, including preparing and coordinating biosafety permit applications.
  • Advanced proficiency with M365.
  • Proven leadership and management skills, including excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to maintain a broad perspective and foster effective relationships with all levels of faculty, staff, students, senior administration and external constituents.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and collegial manner, with an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities of working within a large, decentralized institution.
  • Ability to train, coach, and motivate staff to work collaboratively toward the goals of the office.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high level of initiative and resourcefulness, including the ability to manage deadlines and prioritize work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of chemical and biological hazards related to research.
