Description:

DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Cell & Systems Biology at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 2-year appointment. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2027.

The Research Associate will be intrinsically involved in research projects where they contribute, by way of their academic expertise, to the projects directed by the principal investigator Professor Alan Moses. Alan Moses’ research in computational biology aims to understand how genetic regulatory networks are encoded in genome sequences and how they change or stay the same over evolution. One line of research has focused on intrinsically disordered protein regions (IDRs) and how they contribute to protein regulation. The Moses Lab has recently developed the first systematic functional map of human IDRs, utilized protein language models to achieve zero-shot segmentation of functional regions within the human proteome, and launched user-friendly IDR design software called FAIDR-Desi.

The Research Associate will perform projects in the lab of Prof. Alan Moses in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology relating to Intrinsically disordered Protein regions (IDRs), with a focus on development and execution of high-throughput assays for IDR function. We expect that the research associate will generally serve as a leader in lab and research activities.

The Research Associate will also be responsible to 1) assist in supervising undergrads and grad students in working on research projects related to understanding the sequence-to-function relationship in IDRs and 2) assist in defining the direction of research in the lab, including writing of research articles and preparing preliminary data for funding applications related to the project

Applicants should apply online at the link below and include a covering letter, curriculum vitae and three reference names with their contact addresses and phone numbers. Any questions regarding this position should be directed to Prof. Alan Moses at alan.moses@utoronto.ca.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Candidate must have a Ph.D. in Systems Biology or a related field

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in developing high-throughput assays for disordered protein region function, including postdoctoral training.
  • Experience studying protein function, genetic regulatory networks and/or intrinsically disordered protein regions (IDRs).
  • Experience analyzing biological datasets.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students in research environment.
  • Experience preparing research reports, grant applications, and funding proposals.
  • Experience presenting at international research conferences.
  • Demonstrated record of publications in prestigious international journals.

Skills

  • Knowledge of design of high-throughput assays (including pilot-studies for preliminary analysis).
  • Experience in collection of high-throughput data.
  • Advanced skills in data analysis using established computational approaches.
  • Ability to contribute to development of custom statistical analysis methods when necessary.

Additional skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in professional scientific writing and communication, including primary scientific articles international journals, international conference presentations.

Please note:  This is a two-year term role.
