Position Details

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Salary Range: $50,000 to $65,000 CAD per year

Location: Hybrid model 3days/week - Burnaby, BC/North York, ON, Canada

This is a new requirement.

As an Intermediate Accountant, you will be the hands-on finance partner for an assigned Business Unit, owning full-cycle accounting (AP, AR, billing and recurring invoicing, deferred revenue, reconciliations and payments) and contributing to month-end and year-end close. This is a developmental role, ideal for an accountant progressing towards a CPA designation, and an excellent opportunity to join a global organization that is experiencing rapid growth and be part of their exciting journey.

Role Details

  • Reports to the Corporate Controller or Assistant Controller (if within a portfolio), within the Finance team
  • No direct reports
  • Works closely with the BU EVP/General Manager and BU leaders; sales, customer success and project teams (billing and collections); Assistant Controllers and accounting peers; the Corporate Controller; HR/payroll; IT; and external auditors
  • Part of a clear finance career path (Entry Level, Intermediate, Assistant Controller, Controller), with broad exposure to a multi-entity, multi-currency software business that is growing through acquisition.

What you’ll do

Accounts Receivable, Billing & Revenue

  • Process invoicing requests and issue accurate, timely customer invoices in Business Central.
  • Maintain the BU’s recurring invoicing schedule (subscriptions, maintenance and support renewals) so renewals are billed on time and nothing is missed.
  • Maintain deferred revenue schedules and prepare monthly revenue recognition entries through deferral code in business central for subscription, maintenance and professional services revenue, under the guidance of the supervisor
  • Apply customer receipts, monitor the AR aging, follow up on overdue accounts, and escalate collection risks to the supervisor and BU leadership.
  • Resolve customer billing inquiries and prepare credit notes and adjustments once approved.
  • Reconcile customer payment with invoice in the customer ledger to ensure aging is accurate.

Accounts Payable & Payments

  • Process vendor invoices and employee expense claims, ensuring correct coding, supporting documentation and approval in line with Univerus’ approval authority policy.
  • Prepare wire, ACH, EFT and cheque payment runs for approval, and maintain vendor master data with appropriate controls.
  • Respond promptly to vendor and internal inquiries.
  • Reconcile vendor payment with invoice in the vendor ledger to ensure aging is accurate.
  • Payroll processing and recording payroll journal entry

Month-End & Year-End Close

  • Prepare month-end journal entries for the BU, including accruals, prepaids, deferred revenue, WIP recognition and allocations.
  • Complete bank, credit card and balance sheet account reconciliations, investigating and clearing reconciling items promptly.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany and foreign currency transactions for the entities supported.
  • Prepare year-end working papers and deliver audit requests (PBC items) for the BU.
  • Support sales tax (GST/HST/PST/US state sales tax) filings and other compliance requirements as assigned.

Business Unit Finance Partnership & Reporting

  • Act as the finance representative for the assigned Business Unit, ensuring compliance with Univerus’ financial policies and procedures.
  • Prepare standardized monthly BU financial reports and explain key variances against budget and prior periods.
  • Analyze financial data and assist in preparing the BU’s annual budget and periodic forecasts.
  • Report on and recommend changes that affect the BU’s targets for growth, profitability and working capital.

Process Improvement, Systems & Controls

  • Follow, and help document, standard operating procedures that support consistent bookkeeping across all portfolios.
  • Maintain a strong control environment for the BU, including segregation of duties, approvals and documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate routine work, including the effective and secure use of AI tools in line with Univerus’ data security policies.
  • Support the finance onboarding of newly acquired entities, such as migrating to Business Central, mapping the chart of accounts, and setting up billing and payment processes.
  • Perform other accounting duties as required.

What success looks like

  • The BU’s books are accurate, fully reconciled and closed on time each month, with clear support for every balance.
  • Customers are invoiced correctly and on schedule, and deferred revenue schedules tie to the general ledger.
  • Vendors and employees are paid accurately and on time, with the right approvals in place.
  • Receivables are actively managed, and collection issues are raised early rather than discovered late.
  • BU leaders see this role as a responsive, trusted finance contact who helps them understand their numbers.
  • Year-end and audit requests for the BU are delivered complete, accurate and on time.

Skills And Abilities

  • Actively working towards the CPA designation (e.g., enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program), or a recognized bookkeeping or accounting credential such as a college accounting/bookkeeping diploma or certificate, or Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) designation
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field preferred; a relevant diploma combined with equivalent experience will be considered
  • 2+ years of relevant accounting experience, in either a firm or industry setting, including full-cycle AP, AR and reconciliations
  • Experience supporting month-end close and preparing journal entries
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and full-cycle accounting (ASPE / IFRS fundamentals)
  • Understanding of revenue recognition and deferred revenue; exposure to software or subscription billing is an asset
  • Working knowledge of Canadian sales tax (GST/HST/PST); exposure to US or other international sales tax is an asset
  • Familiarity with internal controls and why they matter
  • Working knowledge of AI and how to apply it effectively and securely in a financial setting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (lookups, pivot tables, reconciliation workbooks)
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or another ERP system
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain financial matters to nonfinance colleagues
  • Works well in a fast-paced environment and manages multiple deadlines across entities and time zones
  • Highly accurate and detail-oriented; takes ownership of work from start to finish
  • Builds productive relationships with BU leaders, customers and vendors
  • Handles confidential information with discretion and integrity
  • Eager to learn, open to coaching, and committed to continuous improvement
  • Experience in a software, technology or SaaS business (including subscription or recurring billing), a multi-entity or multi-currency environment, or a growing or acquisitive organization is an asset
