Original job description
About UVAD:
UVAD is making something fast. We are developing Canada’s first supersonic airplane since the Avro Arrow. To accelerate this development, UVAD is calling for highly driven and talented people to join our engineering team.
We are in the process of completing the development of the Falcon, a first-of-its-kind, supersonic UAV. We have assembled a talented, multi-disciplinary team, each with real-world industry experience. Our expertise spans aerodynamics, propulsion, mechanical systems, control systems, and embedded systems. Our technical leadership has decades of cumulative experience developing supersonic and hypersonic platforms. We are a small, agile group that can offer a broad range of interesting engineering challenges in an emerging sector with significant growth potential.
Career Description:
UVAD is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with product/systems development experience. The role is strategically centered on the Falcon’s development, offering a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to one of the most ambitious UAV programs in the industry.
Candidates must be able to work autonomously and collaboratively to identify challenges and devise innovative solutions. The position will require the application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and related mathematical methods to ensure structural integrity and weight optimization while maintaining safety margins. Experience with structural composites and design for manufacturability is highly valued.
There will be opportunities to both specialize technically and provide oversight of, and mentorship to, junior engineers. Your work will ultimately be showcased during UAV flight test campaigns, which you will have the opportunity to participate in.
About You:
You are someone who:
- Is driven to achieve great things.
- Appreciates that fundamental physics governs what is possible.
- Enjoys the process of developing solutions to technical challenges.
- Thrives when collaborating with peers to develop creative concepts.
- Creates production ready systems from mechanical prototypes.
You would like to:
- Be a part of a work culture where the entire company is laser focused on achieving a common goal, the Falcon Supersonic UAV.
- Research and develop new skills and apply them in the real world.
- Transform requirements and concepts into detailed designs for manufacture.
- Validate your designs through testing on the ground, then in flight.
Responsibilities:
- Develop design requirements and create cost-efficient, manufacturable design solutions.
- Identify loading conditions and perform structural analysis.
- Supervise and verify the work of junior engineers.
- Oversee aspects of prototype and production phases while managing communications with vendors.
- Opportunity for travel (international and domestic) to trade shows, conferences, customer and vendor sites.
Qualifications:
- Professional Engineering license (P.Eng.) from APEGA or other transferable engineering association.
- Demonstrated expertise in structural analysis using FEA for mechanical systems.
- Strong foundation in mathematical modeling principles underlying structural analysis and mechanical system behavior.
- Proficient in materials engineering, with specialization in structural composites, is highly valued.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary teams.
- Aerospace experience preferred; diverse industry background valued.
- Ability to receive and maintain a security clearance with the Government of Canada.
Compensation:
- Salary based on experience and education.
- Group health benefits package and Health Spending Account (HSA).
- Optional enrollment in RSP matching program.
- Eligible to participate in stock options.
- Minimum three weeks paid vacation.
- Additional time off includes four planned company-wide days-off and a Christmas holiday shutdown. Join our team of highly driven and talented engineers.
