Description

Position Summary

We're looking for a Tax Manager to own tax for the companies Ventures builds. You'll set each new company up correctly from the start, keep it compliant as it grows, and build the process every future venture follows. The work centres on Canada and the U.S., with filings elsewhere coordinated through local advisors as ventures enter new markets. The role is based in Montreal.

AI should be part of how you work. Use it to research, draft, analyze, and automate. You're responsible for the quality of the result.

Values

  • Sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Taking responsibility and finishing work without being chased.
  • Understanding how a young company makes money and how tax follows it.
  • Curiosity and a willingness to change an approach that isn't working.
  • The honesty to say when a position isn't defensible, including your own.

What you'll do

  • Set up each new venture correctly

When Ventures decides to build a company, you'll work out what tax needs to be in place before it takes its first customer: structuring input, registrations, elections, and how its products and pricing are taxed. You'll work with the founder in residence, Valsoft's finance and legal teams, and the VP, Tax on structuring decisions.

A venture that starts with the wrong registrations or an untested sales tax position carries that into every invoice. You'll make those calls early, document the positions you take, and build a setup checklist so each new venture starts faster than the last.

  • Run compliance across the ventures

You'll manage Canadian federal and provincial corporate income tax returns and U.S. federal and state income and franchise tax returns for each venture, reviewing what external providers prepare. You'll keep a tax calendar, records, and audit files for every company, and resolve notices and correspondence from the CRA, Revenu Québec, the IRS, and state authorities.

As ventures enter other markets, you'll coordinate corporate and indirect tax filings with local advisors and decide when a venture needs its own registrations there.

  • Own sales and indirect tax

You'll own U.S. sales and use tax for the ventures: nexus monitoring, registrations, taxability analysis, filing, and remittance. In Canada you'll manage GST/HST and QST, including registrations, returns, and input tax credit and input tax refund recovery.

You'll work with each venture's finance and billing setup so customer invoices charge the right tax in each jurisdiction, and keep exemption certificates and supporting documentation ready for audit. Early customers often come through Valsoft's portfolio businesses, so a wrong tax charge lands on a relationship the venture depends on.

  • Handle intercompany and group reporting

Ventures run on Valsoft's capital, infrastructure, and support, which means intercompany arrangements from the first day. You'll set up and document those arrangements, coordinate transfer pricing documentation with external advisors in line with CRA, IRS, and OECD guidelines, and support any inquiries.

You'll prepare tax provisions under IFRS, including current and deferred tax and uncertain tax positions, and give Valsoft's corporate tax team its group inputs: T106 and T1134 foreign reporting, associated corporation schedules, country-by-country reporting, and Pillar Two data.

  • Build the tax process Ventures runs on

You'll design the processes, controls, and tools that let tax keep up as the number of ventures grows, and decide where a tax engine or automation is worth adding. Founders, finance, and legal will treat you as their main contact on tax, and you'll explain requirements in plain terms.

You'll give tax input on new products, pricing models, market entry, and partnership arrangements, summarize legislative changes that affect the ventures, and support the VP, Tax on structuring as a venture grows into an independent business.

What you'll bring

  • A CPA designation (Canada or U.S.).
  • At least 4 years of post-designation tax experience in public accounting or a corporate tax environment, with exposure to both Canadian and U.S. tax.
  • Working knowledge of transfer pricing, international tax, and tax accounting under IFRS.
  • You can look at a new business model and work out what tax it triggers before it launches.
  • You prepare, review, and file returns yourself.
  • You manage external advisors and hold them to deadlines and quality.
  • You can give a founder a clear tax answer they can act on the same day.
  • You use AI to research, draft, and analyze, and you check the output before it goes anywhere.
  • You work independently and keep several companies' calendars moving at once.
  • You finish what you start and keep records an auditor can follow.

Useful experience

  • Hands-on U.S. sales and use tax compliance
  • Canadian GST/HST and QST compliance
  • Tax for startups or newly formed entities
  • Sales tax treatment of software and SaaS
  • Voluntary disclosures
  • Working in a group with many subsidiaries
  • Bilingual

Who will enjoy this role

You like getting something right before it becomes a problem. A founder mentions a new pricing model on Monday, and by Wednesday you've worked out where it creates nexus and what the invoice needs to say.

In one week you might register a new entity, review a U.S. state return for an older venture, and walk a founder in residence through what QST means for their first Quebec customer.

The hard part is that every venture is different and none of them waits for tax. Founders move fast, priorities shift when a venture changes direction, and you'll often set up a company whose product isn't finished yet.

  • Conformité pratique en sales and use tax américaine
