Original job description

Our Story & Purpose:

We’re Vancity, a member-owned credit union built on the principles of inclusion and social justice. Since 1946, our relentless commitment to these values has helped us challenge the status quo and break down barriers. We’ve made bold commitments to become net-zero by 2040 across all mortgages and loans, and we’re actively pursuing strategies in Indigenous banking and financial resilience for our members.

As the largest private sector Living Wage Employer in Canada, we’re proud to be consistently recognized as one of the country’s Top Employers. If you’re ready to join our team of 2,300 diverse individuals, access competitive rewards and benefits, and be part of a greater movement - apply today!

Your Role in Supporting Our Members:

As a Data Architect, you will lead the design and evolution of Vancity’s cloud-native data ecosystem as our data and analytics platforms migrate to Azure. You will define secure, scalable, and compliant data architectures using Azure Databricks, Spark, Unity Catalog, and Purview, with a strong focus on enterprise data governance. You will establish data standards, lineage, and metadata practices while designing reliable data pipelines and partnering across technical and business teams to embed consistent governance and architectural best practices.

This is a Full-time, Permanent role within our Architecture & Engineering team and will report directly to the Director, Data Platform. Our head office is based in Vancouver, but we are open to candidates in BC and Ontario. While this position provides a hybrid work arrangement, you will be expected to be on-site for events and business demands.

How You'll Make an Impact:

Leading the design and optimization of secure, scalable, and compliant data architectures within Azure using Databricks, Spark, Unity Catalog, and Purview
Defining cloud-native architectural patterns, standards, and best practices for how enterprise data is stored, processed, governed, and accessed
Implementing data governance frameworks that support regulatory compliance, including PIPEDA, OSFI, and FINTRAC requirements
Establishing data classification, lineage, access controls, and metadata standards using Unity Catalog and Purview
Architecting automated and scalable data pipelines using Databricks and Spark for batch and streaming workloads
Integrating CI/CD practices to support version control, testing, deployment, and monitoring of data workflows
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to plan and execute the migration of legacy data platforms to Azure Cloud while embedding security, governance, and compliance requirements
Partnering with engineering, BI, data science, security, and compliance teams to align architectural decisions and governance standards
Mentoring junior team members and promoting consistent adoption of cloud data architecture and governance best practices

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

Deep knowledge of cloud-native data architecture and the ability to design secure, scalable, and compliant enterprise data solutions
Strong hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure, Databricks, Apache Spark, Unity Catalog, and Microsoft Purview
Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise data governance, including data classification, lineage, metadata management, access controls, and data integrity
Experience architecting scalable batch and streaming data pipelines and integrating CI/CD practices across data workflows
Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements affecting enterprise data, including PIPEDA, OSFI, and FINTRAC
Experience supporting or leading the migration of legacy data platforms to cloud environments
Strong ability to collaborate across engineering, business intelligence, data science, security, and compliance functions
Ability to provide technical guidance, mentor others, and promote consistent architectural and governance practices

Extra Skills That Set You Apart:

Experience helping organizations evolve toward modern, cloud-native enterprise data ecosystems
Experience establishing reusable architecture patterns, standards, and governance practices across multiple teams
Experience supporting enterprise-scale Azure data platform transformations

You’ll Thrive Here If You Are:

A strategic architect - You connect immediate technical decisions to a secure, scalable, and sustainable data ecosystem.
Governance-minded - You embed data integrity, traceability, security, and compliance into architecture from the start.
A collaborative partner - You build alignment across technical, business, security, and compliance teams to move complex work forward.
A technical mentor - You share expertise, promote best practices, and help strengthen data architecture capability across the organization.

We value lived experience, so if you are interested in this role, we encourage you to apply even if you feel your skills don't perfectly align with those listed.

What You’ll Earn:

This role offers a salary range of $125,000 to $161,700 per annum. The base pay offered may vary depending on factors such as relevant qualifications, skills, previous experience, and internal equity. As part of our total rewards package, employees may also be eligible for our annual incentive program, subject to program eligibility requirements.

Why You’ll Love Working Here:

A career at Vancity is more than just a job, you’re joining a tradition of change-makers who are creating lasting change for our communities. Beyond base pay, we offer a comprehensive total rewards package to ensure our employees are empowered to thrive:

Living Wage Employer: We’re the largest private-sector Living Wage Employer in Canada and consistently ranked among Canada’s Top Employers.
Customizable Benefits: Permanent employees receive flexible benefit packages that can be tailored annually to meet evolving needs.
Generous Vacation: New employees start with 3-4 weeks of vacation per year, with additional days earned over time.
Extra Stat Holidays: In addition to BC’s 11 statutory holidays, we offer 2 extra days, plus care days for personal or family illness.
Immediate Health Coverage: Health and dental benefits begin on your hire date, with three levels of coverage to choose from.
Defined Benefit Pension: Our retirement plan provides a guaranteed income for life, recognizing that retirement looks different for everyone.
