Original job description

Company description

Are you passionate about shaping North America's sustainable energy future?

Verdyn Inc. is a Canadian power electronics technology and manufacturing company. We design and build advanced power infrastructure for demanding electrical environments, with our head office in Toronto and our manufacturing facility in Oakville, Ontario. Our mission? To deliver reliable, efficient power solutions, enabling our clients to focus on what they do best.

What we do:

  • Power quality: Our E-STATCOM and STATCOM systems keep voltage stable and networks clean, preventing equipment damage and production downtime and lowering operating costs for our industrial customers.
  • Power electronics platforms: Our IGBT and SiC converter platforms are designed and manufactured in Ontario and are at the heart of our systems.
  • Complete delivery: We take each project from study and engineering through design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, maintenance and service.

Job summary

As an integral part of Verdyn's dynamic team, we invite you to start your career in power quality with our Power Systems group. This new graduate role takes you from the customer's site to the final report: you will install power quality analyzers on site, collect the data, work side by side with our customers' teams, and model their networks to find the right solution. You will work with licensed engineers on every study and gain the supervised experience you need on your path to a P.Eng. licence.

Responsibilities

  • Plan measurement campaigns with the responsible engineer: measurement points, analyzer settings, duration and what the customer needs to provide.
  • Prepare, configure and test power quality analyzers, current probes and data loggers before each site visit.
  • Install analyzers on customer low and medium voltage systems, in switchgear, motor control centres and transformers, once trained and qualified, and monitor them remotely throughout each campaign.
  • Collect the site data each study needs: single line diagrams, nameplate and cable data, protection settings, utility supply data, operating records and photographs.
  • Represent Verdyn on site: attend safety orientations, explain the measurement plan to the customer's operations and electrical staff, agree access and outages, and close out each visit with the customer.
  • Analyze harmonics, flicker, voltage sags and swells, transients, unbalance and reactive power against IEEE 519, IEEE 1159 and the IEC 61000 series.
  • Build and validate network models in software tools, and run harmonic, load flow and E-STATCOM sizing studies under the direction of a licensed engineer.
  • Automate data processing in Python or MATLAB, and draft clear study reports for review and sign off by a licensed professional engineer.
  • Collaborate with our sales, project delivery, simulation and test teams so that field results feed into our proposals and products.
  • Keep our analyzer fleet calibrated, maintained and ready, and arrange site logistics and equipment shipping.
  • Uphold strict compliance with Verdyn's site safety procedures and each customer's permit, lockout and arc flash rules.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • The goal of becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • A solid grounding in power systems: three phase circuits, per unit, transformers, power factor and harmonics.
  • Power system modelling experience from your degree or a project, in any tool.
  • Proficiency in Excel and in Python or MATLAB.
  • Clear written and spoken English, and the confidence to work with customer teams on site.
  • Able to travel approximately 30% percent with overnight stays, and to work evenings, nights or weekends when a customer outage requires it.
  • A valid driver's licence.
  • A strong ethic for self-management, exhibiting the ability to work independently on site while adhering to schedules and safety requirements.

Nice to have

  • Co-op or internship experience in power systems, utilities, field service, testing or electrical construction.
  • Hands-on use of power quality analyzers (Fluke, Dranetz, Hioki, PQube or similar).
  • Experience with PSCAD, ETAP, PowerFactory, PSS/E or MATLAB Simulink.
  • Coursework or projects in power electronics, FACTS, STATCOM or active filters.
  • The National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE) already passed.
  • A valid passport, for occasional work outside Canada.

At Verdyn, we don't just offer jobs, we build careers. This role allows you to be part of our journey toward a sustainable energy future. Join us, and make a difference!
