Position Purpose

The Building Performance Engineer delivers advanced engineering, modelling, certification, and technical consulting services for fenestration and building-envelope systems at Veridis Solutions. Working within the research and engineering team, the role integrates project delivery, technical development, and service innovation to provide rigorous analysis, practical recommendations, and high-quality client deliverables.

Core Responsibilities

Advanced Thermal Analysis and Modelling

  • Perform advanced heat-transfer and thermal-bridge analyses for fenestration and building-envelope systems.
  • Develop, review, and document 2D and 3D thermal models using appropriate engineering software and validated methodologies.
  • Interpret modelling results and translate findings into clear design, performance, and product-development recommendations.
  • Collaborate on complex analyses, methodology development, technical reviews, and quality assurance.
  • Maintain organised calculation files, model assumptions, input data, and supporting technical records.

Condensation Risk Analysis

  • Evaluate interior surface temperatures, thermal anomalies, and potential condensation conditions in fenestration and building-envelope assemblies.
  • Assess project-specific boundary conditions, material properties, geometry, and operating assumptions.
  • Prepare technically defensible reports that clearly communicate assumptions, limitations, results, and recommendations.
  • Support clients in identifying practical measures to reduce condensation risk and improve thermal performance.

NFRC and CSA Certification Projects

  • Perform and support modelling, technical documentation, and engineering review for NFRC and CSA certification projects.
  • Coordinate project inputs and resolve technical questions with clients, laboratories, certification stakeholders, and internal team members.
  • Apply applicable procedures, standards, programme requirements, and Veridis quality-control practices.
  • Support certification-related research, methodology updates, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Engineering Tools and Process Development

  • Develop, test, document, and maintain engineering tools, templates, calculation methods, and automated workflows.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the consistency, traceability, quality, and efficiency of modelling and certification work.
  • Validate tool outputs against established calculations, benchmark cases, or approved methodologies before implementation.
  • Provide internal guidance and knowledge transfer for newly developed tools and processes.

Research, Innovation, and New Service Development

  • Identify and evaluate new technical services that align with the position holder’s expertise, Veridis’ capabilities, and client needs.
  • Contribute to the design, validation, documentation, and market readiness of new service offerings.
  • Potential development areas may include building-energy modelling, retrofit optimisation, embodied-carbon assessment, hygrothermal analysis, climate-resilience assessment, and decarbonisation support.
  • Contribute to applied research, technical articles, presentations, training, and industry guidance where appropriate.

Project Delivery and Client Support

  • Contribute to project scoping, work planning, fee development, scheduling, and progress monitoring.
  • Participate in client meetings and present engineering findings in a clear, professional, and solutions-oriented manner.
  • Prepare concise, accurate, and well-structured technical reports, memoranda, calculation packages, and presentation materials.
  • Manage assigned work in accordance with agreed scope, schedule, budget, confidentiality, and quality requirements.
  • Escalate technical uncertainties, scope changes, schedule risks, or information gaps promptly.

Qualifications and Experience

Required or Expected

  • Professional Engineer licence or eligibility to practise in the applicable Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Degree in civil, mechanical, building, architectural, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer, building science, fenestration, and building-envelope performance.
  • Experience with 2D thermal modelling and the ability to develop competency in advanced 3D thermal
  • modelling.
  • Strong analytical judgement, technical writing, organisation, and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively on multidisciplinary and technically
  • complex projects.

Relevant Assets

  • Experience with THERM, WINDOW, EnergyPlus, HOT2000, eQUEST, AutoCAD, SketchUp, or comparable
  • tools.
  • Experience with NFRC or CSA certification work, laboratory services, or fenestration product evaluation.
  • Experience in energy modelling, retrofit analysis, embodied-carbon assessment, sustainability consulting, research, or technical training.
  • Programming, scripting, data analysis, workflow automation, or engineering software-development experience.

Key Competencies

Technical rigour

Applies sound engineering judgement and documents assumptions, methods, and limitations.

Collaboration

Works constructively with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders.

Innovation

Identifies practical opportunities to improve methods, tools, services, and client value.

Accountability

Takes ownership of quality, commitments, communication, and timely escalation of risks.

Performance Expectations

  • Deliver accurate, traceable, and technically sound work that meets Veridis quality requirements.
  • Demonstrate progressive autonomy in advanced modelling, condensation analysis, and certification assignments.
  • Contribute measurable improvements to engineering tools, workflows, documentation, or service delivery.
  • Build trusted client relationships through responsiveness, technical credibility, clarity, and professional judgement.
  • Contribute to at least one structured new-service development initiative as priorities and capacity permit.

Scope and Role Development

This job description defines the principal responsibilities of the position but is not exhaustive.
