Role Description The Quality Control Technician supports the consistent production, placement and verification of asphalt materials by performing representative sampling, field inspections, laboratory testing, accurate recordkeeping and timely communication of results. Working closely with the QC laboratory, asphalt plant and paving teams, the Technician monitors quality against approved mix designs, the Viola Quality Manual, applicable test methods and project-specific requirements. This position is responsible for promptly identifying, documenting and escalating potential non-conformances while maintaining impartial, reliable and traceable testing practices.

Key Responsibilities
Field sampling, inspection and testing
- Collect, identify, document and transport representative samples of hot mix asphalt, aggregates and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) from production facilities, stockpiles and active paving sites, ensuring proper handling and traceability.
- Conduct field inspections and quality checks, including asphalt temperature measurements, compaction/density verification and core sampling, while documenting site conditions and relevant observations.
- Identify and promptly report material deficiencies, including segregation, contamination, temperature irregularities and other potential quality concerns.
Asphalt and aggregate laboratory support
- Perform asphalt and aggregate testing in accordance with applicable LS, AASHTO, ASTM and approved procedures to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Conduct Marshall and/or Superpave testing, including asphalt binder content, aggregate gradation, relative density, air voids, RAP evaluation and pavement core testing, as required.
- Prepare and verify test specimens, calculations and results, ensuring accuracy, completeness and timely reporting of irregularities or non-conforming results
Quality compliance, documentation and reporting
- Ensure sampling and testing activities comply with the Viola Quality Manual, approved mix designs, contractual specifications and applicable OPSS, MTO and municipal requirements.
- Maintain accurate and traceable testing records, inspection reports and daily documentation while communicating results and quality concerns promptly to the QC Manager and relevant operational personnel.
- Identify and document non-conformances, support investigations and corrective actions, and maintain confidentiality, impartiality and integrity throughout all quality control activities.
Equipment, coordination and continuous improvement
- Inspect, maintain and verify field and laboratory testing equipment, ensuring proper calibration, accurate performance and compliance with established quality procedures.
- Coordinate daily testing priorities with the QC Manager and collaborate with plant operations, paving crews, clients and external agencies to meet production schedules and quality requirements.
- Participate in quality audits, CCIL proficiency testing and continuous improvement initiatives while supporting corrective actions, process improvements and training of junior personnel.

Qualifications
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, materials testing or a related discipline preferred; comparable relevant training and experience may be considered.
- Approximately 1–3 years of asphalt, aggregates, road construction or construction-materials quality testing experience preferred; relevant co-op experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of asphalt production and paving, Marshall/Superpave fundamentals, sampling practices and common test procedures; familiarity with OPSS, MTO, municipal specifications and CCIL programs is an asset.
- CCIL hot mix asphalt technician certification or other relevant certifications are assets; ability and willingness to obtain required qualifications and maintain demonstrated competency.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with an acceptable driving record, as travel to active facilities and project sites is required.
- Competence with Microsoft Word and Excel, mobile inspection tools and electronic quality-management records; strong written communication and practical numerical skills.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Work is performed at asphalt plants, laboratories, yards and active road construction sites, including outdoors in varying weather, on uneven ground and near mobile equipment and hot asphalt.
- Requires prolonged standing and walking, bending, carrying test equipment and periodically lifting materials or samples up to approximately 50 lbs with appropriate safe-handling controls or assistance.
- Flexible availability for early starts, extended shifts, overtime, evenings, nights and weekends may be required during peak construction/paving periods.
- Travel to multiple GTA project locations is expected; required safety training, site orientation and PPE must be completed and maintained.
