Original job description

About Voltera

Voltera is a rapidly scaling and profitable Canadian tech company that has been driving change in the additive electronics industry since 2013. Our customers span 92 countries and use our products to improve quality of life and push the boundaries of what electronics can do. From developing electronics skin to exploring space, our products support some of the world’s most exciting engineering endeavors.

Our first product, the V-One PCB printer, integrates drilling through-holes, printing conductive materials, dispensing solder paste, and reflowing circuits to enable fast iteration of circuit board designs. Our second product, the NOVA materials dispensing system, offers precision dispensing of functional materials on both flexible and rigid substrates for flexible hybrid electronics prototyping and materials research.

As we continue to tackle new challenges, we are looking for ambitious, talented individuals to join the adventure. We are a tight-knit, mission-driven team. You will be supported by people who care, challenged to grow, and trusted to make a real impact.

About the Job

Own mechanical design of parts, assemblies, and subsystems from concept through production release.
Translate product needs into mechanical requirements for performance, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
Develop detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and BOMs with clear design intent.
Apply GD&T, datum schemes, fits, and tolerance stack-ups to ensure parts function correctly and can be manufactured and inspected.
Select materials, manufacturing processes, finishes, and standard components appropriate for performance, cost, and production volume.
Design for manufacturing and assembly, accounting for tooling access, assembly sequence, fastening, alignment, and inspection.
Build and test prototypes to validate designs, identify failure modes, and resolve mechanical issues.
Work directly with suppliers to review manufacturability, resolve drawing questions, and qualify parts.
Support first articles, pilot builds, production launch, and ongoing manufacturing.
Partner with production teams to improve assembly methods, resolve fit and quality issues, and reduce rework.
Manage design changes through controlled drawing, BOM, and revision updates.
Collaborate with electrical, firmware, software, and manufacturing teams to resolve integration constraints.
Contribute to design reviews and mentor other engineers on mechanical design, tolerancing, and manufacturing practices.
Document design decisions, calculations, test results, and production requirements.

Working conditions

Working from the office in Waterloo at least three days per week.

About You

Post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
Strong mechanical design experience with demonstrated ownership of parts and assemblies from concept through production.
Experience launching at least one hardware product, including design release, pilot builds, and production ramp.
Proficiency with 3D CAD and detailed engineering drawings using Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent.
Strong working knowledge of GD&T, including functional datum selection, geometric controls, and inspection requirements.
Experience performing tolerance stack-ups and specifying practical fits, clearances, and tolerances.
Background in injection molding parts for precision systems.
Solid grounding in mechanics, material properties, structural stiffness, thermal expansion, and fastening methods.
Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and injection molding.
Experience applying DFM/DFA principles to improve part quality, assembly efficiency, and cost.
Hands-on ability to assemble prototypes, use measurement tools, troubleshoot failures, and verify design changes.
Experience working directly with suppliers and production teams to resolve manufacturing and assembly issues.
Familiarity with BOM management, engineering change processes, and revision control.
Ability to independently plan and deliver mechanical design work, identify risks, and communicate tradeoffs.
Strong technical communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to haves

Experience with precision equipment, gantry systems, automation, robotics, or electromechanical products.
Experience designing fixtures, jigs, and assembly aids for production and inspection.
Familiarity with FEA for structural, thermal, or vibration analysis.
Experience with bearings, linear guides, belts, lead screws, motors, and precision alignment features.
Experience with molded part design, tooling reviews, and tooling modifications.
Familiarity with first article inspection, process capability, and root cause analysis.
Experience improving production yield, reducing assembly time, or lowering product cost after launch.
Experience designing for serviceability, shipping durability, and long-term reliability.

Why We’re Awesome

We’re a scaling company - you’re hired to have a voice, not to be a cog.
Three weeks' vacation to start, plus a paid end-of-year company shutdown.
Flexible work hours.
Family-friendly work culture.
Collaborative work environment.
Located in the growing tech hub of Waterloo, Ontario, close to restaurants and easily accessible by public transit.

If this sounds like a good fit, reach out! We’d love to hear from you.

Compensation

The expected base salary range for this role is CAD $90,000–$110,000. Final compensation will be based on job-related skills, experience, and qualifications. This range reflects base pay only and does not include bonus eligibility or benefits.
