About This Opportunity
Greyhaven houses around 60 large parrots at the South Delta/Ladner facility and smaller birds at our Tsawwassen location. The large parrot shelter is situated on a farm and is not transit accessible.
A Few Things About Volunteering With Greyhaven
- The environment is very loud - the noise level of both the large and small parrot species can be overwhelming for some people - hearing protection is recommended
- The work can be physically demanding - cleaning the cages is hard and dirty work. A typical shift includes cleaning 10 - 15 cages, sweeping and mopping floors, taking out trash and feeding the birds.
- Peanuts and tree nuts are commonly found in parrot food.
- Parrots naturally produce dander from their feathers which creates dust. If you have allergies to dust or nuts the shelter is probably not the right fit for you.
- The parrots can be unpredictable and aggressive without apparent reason. They have the capacity to inflict significant injuries so you need to stay mindful when working around their cages.
- All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
What You Can Expect
- New volunteers must attend an online orientation session held on Zoom prior to being scheduled for a shelter shift.
- For your first shift you'll be partnered with the shift supervisor for hands-on training.
- There are 3 shifts a day: 9:30am to 2pm, 11am - 2pm and 2pm to 6pm.
- Birds are kept in their cages and with the approval from the Shift Supervisor, volunteers may socialize with a parrot outside its cage.
- Volunteers work under the direction of the Shift Supervisor.
Volunteer Requirements
Whether you meet these requirements or not, we encourage you to share your interest in us. You may still be a fit for a different opportunity with our organization.
