VS Group is an established Canadian business that has been serving clients for more than 30 years. Our North Bay head office is supported by offices in New Liskeard and Toronto, and our team provides a wide range of accounting, bookkeeping, tax, payroll, business, technology and consulting services.

We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeper / Tax Preparer to join our North Bay team.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants more than a traditional bookkeeping position. Our team members work directly with business owners and their accounting teams, manage client files, solve problems, implement accounting systems, assist with tax and year-end work, and help clients improve the way they manage their businesses.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will work with a diverse group of clients, including corporations, sole proprietorships and partnerships.

You will be responsible for managing and supporting client bookkeeping and accounting files, preparing payroll and government remittances, assisting with tax preparation and year-end work, and providing hands-on support to clients both in our office and, when required, at their locations.

Because our clients operate in many different industries, no two files are exactly the same. You may work with a small local business one day and a more complex corporate client the next.

The successful candidate should be comfortable learning new systems and working with a variety of accounting and industry-specific software.

Key ResponsibilitiesBookkeeping & Accounting

Manage bookkeeping files for corporations, sole proprietorships and partnerships.
Perform full-cycle bookkeeping and accounting functions.
Enter and review accounting transactions, invoices, receipts and source documents.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards and other balance sheet accounts.
Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Prepare financial reports, trial balances and draft financial statements.
Review bookkeeping records for accuracy and completeness.
Assist with year-end accounting and working-paper preparation.
Identify discrepancies and accounting issues and work with clients to resolve them.
Maintain organized and complete client files.
Assist clients with the implementation and improvement of computerized accounting systems.
Work with our technology team and clients to implement accounting and business systems.

Payroll & Government Remittances

Process payroll for clients using various payroll systems.
Review employee information and timesheets.
Calculate wages, deductions and statutory requirements.
Prepare payroll source deduction remittances.
Prepare and process ROEs and T4s.
Assist with WSIB reporting and related requirements.
Keep current with applicable payroll legislation and government requirements.
Answer client questions and assist with payroll-related issues.

Tax Preparation

Prepare and assist with T1 personal income tax returns.
Assist with corporate T2 tax returns and year-end files.
Develop an understanding of the Income Tax Act and related CRA requirements.
Assist with GST/HST calculations, filings and related matters.
Assist with tax research and client questions.
Work with the accounting team on year-end and tax engagements.

Client Service

A major part of this position is working directly with our clients.

Communicate with clients by telephone, email, video conference and in person.
Visit client locations when required.
Assess client bookkeeping and accounting requirements.
Help clients improve their accounting and administrative systems.
Provide practical assistance and solutions to client problems.
Explain accounting, bookkeeping and payroll matters in a way clients can understand.
Build long-term professional relationships with clients.
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality and sound judgment at all times.

Technology & Software

VS Group is a technology-focused accounting and business services firm. We use a wide range of accounting, tax and business software, and we expect our team members to be comfortable working with technology.

Experience with any of the following is an asset:

QuickBooks Online (QBO)
QuickBooks Desktop
Sage 50

Experience with other accounting or bookkeeping platforms is also valuable.

You do not need to know every system listed above. We are looking for someone who understands accounting and bookkeeping fundamentals and is comfortable learning new technology.

What We're Looking For: Required / Preferred Qualifications

Several years of practical bookkeeping and accounting experience.
Experience preparing or assisting with personal tax returns.
Payroll experience.
Strong understanding of bookkeeping principles and financial statements.
Working knowledge of GST/HST, payroll remittances and WSIB requirements.
Understanding of CRA requirements and Canadian taxation.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines.
Ability to work independently while also being an effective team member.
Professionalism and the ability to maintain strict client confidentiality.
Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation, as travel to client locations may occasionally be required.

Bilingual French/English is an asset, but is not required.

Accounting designation or formal accounting education is an asset, but we are primarily interested in practical experience, ability and attitude.
