The Maintenance Technician works directly with the Maintenance & Technical Supervisor to keep manufacturing equipment, tooling, and facility assets safe, clean, reliable, and production-ready. The role performs hands-on inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, setup support, and documentation on electromechanical equipment and related controls across manufacturing, lamination, slitting/foil, packaging, and related facility areas.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Reliability

  • Complete scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and repairs using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), under the direction of the Maintenance & Technical Supervisor.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and process-related equipment issues, including related controls, using electromechanical tools and test equipment, within training and authorization.
  • Service and repair programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motors, and drives.
  • Determine the most cost-effective repair or upgrade; disassemble equipment, repair or replace defective components in kind, reassemble, and start up equipment.
  • Assemble and maintain electrical and electronic devices and systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other production mechanical systems as necessary.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns, identify likely causes, complete approved repairs, and communicate unresolved issues promptly.
  • Assist external contractors, equipment suppliers, and service technicians during specialized repairs, installations, and commissioning.
  • Help reduce unplanned downtime by identifying recurring issues and recommending practical improvements.

Manufacturing & Production Support

  • Provide hands-on technical support to manufacturing, lamination, slitting/foil, packaging, and material-handling operations.
  • Work with production supervisors and operators to complete maintenance with minimal disruption to the production schedule.
  • Assist with machine setup, changeovers, line adjustments, equipment upgrades, and trial runs.
  • Support plant layout, installation, modification, and start-up of new or existing equipment, including one-off projects requested by production, engineering, and other personnel.
  • Confirm equipment is safe, functional, and ready before returning it to production.
  • Support operators with basic equipment-care practices and escalate technical or safety concerns to the supervisor.

Tooling, Components & Spare Parts

  • Inspect, clean, maintain, repair, and properly store manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and setup components.
  • Prepare the correct tooling for scheduled production runs and report damaged or unavailable items.
  • Assist with tooling refurbishment, replacement, tracking, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Organize, label, protect, and count spare parts, maintenance supplies, and consumables.
  • Help maintain an inventory of critical and other repair parts to ensure uninterrupted production, and notify the supervisor when critical parts reach reorder levels or when inventory records require correction.

Additional Responsibilities

Equipment Care, Housekeeping & Facility Support

  • Keep the maintenance shop, tools, work areas, equipment, and storage locations clean, organized, and safe.
  • Perform basic facility and asset maintenance involving utilities, storage systems, material-handling equipment, and production-support equipment.
  • Protect parts, tools, tooling, and company assets from contamination, loss, or damage.
  • Participate in equipment-condition and housekeeping audits and correct assigned deficiencies.

Documentation & Communication

  • Complete work orders, inspection records, downtime notes, service records, equipment histories, and parts-usage documentation accurately and on time in the CMMS.
  • Communicate completed work, outstanding risks, required parts, and follow-up actions to the Maintenance & Technical Supervisor.
  • Follow established setup procedures, work instructions, equipment manuals, electrical schematics, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Contribute practical observations to root-cause reviews and continuous-improvement activities.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Perform all work in accordance with company safety policies, approved safe-work procedures, and applicable Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Follow Lockout/Tagout and hazardous-energy control requirements and never bypass equipment guards or safety devices.
  • Perform electrical work only within the scope of the technician's trade qualifications and applicable Alberta requirements; refer work outside that scope to a licensed electrician or qualified contractor.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (CSA-approved where applicable) and maintain safe control of tools, parts, and work areas.
  • Report hazards, near misses, damaged equipment, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Participate in safety inspections, incident follow-up, and corrective actions as assigned.
  • Maintain current safety training required for the role, such as WHMIS, first aid, and site-specific safety training.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field is preferred, OR a minimum of three years of industrial maintenance experience with demonstrated electromechanical capability.
  • Red Seal or Alberta trade certification (e.g., Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), Electrician, or Instrumentation and Control Technician) is an asset.
  • Previous hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment is preferred.
  • Practical mechanical aptitude and the ability to use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, electromechanical tools, and test and basic diagnostic equipment safely.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, and how they work together as a complete production system, with hands-on exposure to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and servicing PLCs, motors, and AC/DC drives.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, electrical schematics, blueprints, diagrams, work instructions, and maintenance schedules, and to work in both metric and imperial measurements.
  • Computer skills, including CMMS use, for work orders, records, and parts tracking.
  • Experience with any of the following is a strong plus: automation, instrumentation, chain/belt conveyors, power distribution, motor repair/installation, and welding.
  • Strong organization, problem-solving, communication, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while knowing when to stop and escalate.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in an active manufacturing environment around operating machinery, noise, dust, oils, and production materials.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, and working in varied positions while following safe-work procedures.
  • Must be able to safely lift and handle tools, parts, and maintenance materials appropriate to the task, up to 100 lbs (45 kg), using approved lifting assistance when required.
  • May require shift flexibility, overtime, or after-hours response based on operational needs.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Preventative maintenance tasks completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Quality and timeliness of troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Reduction in repeated equipment issues and unplanned downtime.
  • Accuracy of work orders, maintenance records, equipment histories, and parts usage.
  • Tooling readiness for scheduled production.
  • Spare-parts organization, accuracy, and availability.
  • Equipment cleanliness, work-area organization, and asset condition.
  • Safety compliance, hazard reporting, and proper Lockout/Tagout practices.
  • Effective teamwork and communication with the Maintenance & Technical Supervisor and production teams.

Overall Purpose
