About The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company
Founded in 1896, The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company is one of Canada’s largest mutual insurers, 100% owned by its members, with more than $4.1 billion in annual revenue and $12.5 billion in assets. Headquartered in Winnipeg, Wawanesa is the parent company of Wawanesa Life, which provides life insurance solutions throughout Canada, and Western Financial Group, a leading national distributor of personal and business insurance. In March of 2026, Wawanesa entered into an agreement to acquire Everest Insurance Company of Canada to strengthen its commercial insurance capabilities and advance its long-term growth strategy.

We are currently looking for dedicated, driven, and enthusiastic individuals who thrive in an environment that welcomes change and are looking for an opportunity for diverse experience and advancement on a growing team.

Job Overview

Wawanesa Life is in the middle of a significant business and technology transformation. We are modernizing how advisors, customers, and employees interact with our products by building new digital platforms and adopting modern cloud and AI-assisted engineering practices. This is an opportunity to help shape solutions that will support the business for years to come, not simply maintain what already exists.

As an Application Developer on our Digital Platforms team, you will work with product owners, analysts, architects and other developers to design, build, test, deploy, and support secure, reliable applications. You will contribute through implementation and continue supporting the platform after launch through enhancements, continuous improvement, and defect remediation.

Job Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support modern web applications and services.
Work with business and technology partners to turn business needs into practical, customer-focused solutions.
Build and support integrations with internal systems and external partners using APIs and event-driven patterns.
Contribute to solution design, code reviews, automated testing, troubleshooting, and technical documentation.
Use AI-assisted development throughout application delivery, including analysis, design, coding, testing, documentation, and problem resolution.
Critically review AI-generated output and apply sound engineering judgment, security practices, and quality controls.
Participate in Agile delivery activities and contribute to continuous improvement of team practices.
Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and implement reliable long-term solutions.

Qualifications

Experience developing and supporting modern web applications through the software delivery lifecycle.
Hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js, REST APIs, and Git-based source control.
Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or similar tools, to improve delivery speed, code quality, testing, troubleshooting, or documentation.
Ability to assess AI-generated recommendations rather than accepting them at face value.
Experience working in Agile teams with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
A collaborative mindset, curiosity, and willingness to learn new tools and approaches.

Experience That Would Be an Asset

AWS cloud services, including Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, or S3.
Serverless or event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patterns.
Automated testing with Playwright, Vitest, Testing Library, or comparable frameworks.
CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and infrastructure code.
Insurance, financial services, or other regulated business environments.

Diversity Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

At Wawanesa, we are committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) and believe that our strength lies in the diversity of our people – this is supported by having a representative workforce.

We welcome applications from all qualified candidates, including racialized persons, women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, gender-diverse and neurodiverse individuals, and anyone who can contribute to the further diversification of thought and ideas.

We aim to ensure our recruitment process is accessible to all candidates. If you require accommodations during any stage of the recruitment process, please reach out in confidence to jobs@wawanesa.com.

All Wawanesa job applicants are subject to Wawanesa's Privacy Policy.

Please note that the recruitment process for this position may involve the use of AI tools to screen, assess, or select applicants. All final decisions are taken or reviewed by human recruiters and human hiring leaders in compliance with all applicable legislation.
