We are seeking an experienced CNC Machinist with strong technical machining knowledge and practical experience in horizontal boring, CNC milling, and precision machining operations.
The successful candidate will work with large industrial components, complex fabricated assemblies, and specialized machining equipment requiring accuracy, technical judgment, and safe machining practices.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and adjust CNC machining equipment, including horizontal boring machines, CNC milling machines, and other precision metalworking equipment.
- Perform horizontal boring, milling, drilling, tapping, facing, and related machining operations on large industrial components and fabricated metal assemblies.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, technical specifications, machining instructions, and dimensional tolerances.
- Develop, interpret, modify, and optimize CNC machining programs using appropriate machine controls and CNC programming software.
- Determine machining sequences, tooling requirements, cutting speeds, feed rates, and machining methods based on material specifications and production requirements.
- Set up and align large workpieces, fixtures, tooling, and machine components to ensure proper positioning and machining accuracy.
- Perform precision boring and machining operations on large metal components requiring accurate hole alignment, dimensional control, and surface finishes.
- Use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and other inspection equipment to verify dimensional accuracy.
- Monitor machining operations and make necessary adjustments to maintain specified tolerances, quality standards, and production efficiency.
- Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and compliance with engineering specifications.
- Identify and troubleshoot machining problems involving tooling, machine setup, alignment, cutting conditions, and CNC programming.
- Perform routine machine inspections, basic preventive maintenance, and adjustments to maintain safe and efficient equipment operation.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, fabricators, and other machinists to plan machining procedures and resolve technical production issues.
- Maintain accurate machining records, inspection results, and production documentation.
- Follow workplace safety procedures, equipment operating instructions, and established quality control standards.
- Support the training and technical development of apprentices and junior machinists by sharing machining knowledge and safe operating practices.
Education and Experience
- Completion of secondary school is required.
- Completion of a machinist apprenticeship program, a recognized machining qualification, or equivalent practical CNC machining experience is preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant machining experience, including CNC setup, operation, and precision metal machining, is required.
- Practical knowledge of horizontal boring machine operations, including workpiece setup, alignment, boring techniques, and precision machining procedures, is required.
- Experience operating horizontal boring machines is strongly preferred.
- Experience machining large industrial components, heavy fabricated assemblies, or complex metal parts is an asset.
- Candidates with substantial experience in CNC milling, multi-axis machining, or similar precision machining operations will also be considered where their technical skills are transferable to horizontal boring operations.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of CNC machining principles, machine setup, and precision metal cutting operations.
- Knowledge of horizontal boring processes, including boring head setup, spindle alignment, workpiece positioning, and dimensional control.
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, machining symbols, geometric tolerances, and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of CNC programming, G-code and M-code, and machining program adjustments.
- Familiarity with CAM programming software such as Mastercam or equivalent software.
- Knowledge of multi-axis machining, including 4-axis or 5-axis machining operations.
- Ability to select appropriate cutting tools, machining parameters, feeds, speeds, and machining sequences.
- Experience with precision measurement, quality inspection, and troubleshooting machining inaccuracies.
- Ability to safely handle and machine large, heavy, or irregularly shaped metal components.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a manufacturing environment.
Work Schedule and Conditions
- Permanent, full-time employment.
- 40 hours per week.
- Flexible work schedule based on production requirements.
- Must be available to work day, evening, night, and weekend shifts when required.
- Work is performed on-site in an industrial manufacturing facility.
- The position involves standing for extended periods, working around heavy machinery, handling machining tools and components, and following established industrial safety procedures.
- Overtime may be required depending on production demands and will be compensated in accordance with applicable employment standards.
