Systems Safety & Environmental (SS&E) Engineer - NETE

Weir Canada, Inc.
Dartmouth NS, Canada
Permanent Full-time, Onsite/Remote work

CCS26-20

Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Systems Safety & Environmental (SS&E) Engineer to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team supporting the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Project at the Department of National Defence (DND) Office within the Bluenose building in Dartmouth, NS. On behalf of the Project Management Office (PMO) RCD the SS&E Engineer will conduct System Safety and Environmental Engineering activities across the RCD Project, identifying hazards, quantifying risks, and recommending mitigations based on best practices. A key activity is the management of RCD Hazard Tracking System (HTS) and the production of periodic Hazard Management Assessment Reports and Safety Case Reports. The position requires collaboration and liaison with Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of Industry supplied Safety and Environmental materials. This is a full-time, permanent position with a combination of working in-office and working from home. This position provides a great opportunity to become immersed in cutting edge technology of the RCN’s future surface combatant fleet and the forefront of modern Canadian system safety engineering.

What we do at Weir

Since 1953, Weir has operated and managed the Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE), a Department of National Defence (DND) facility located in LaSalle with operations in Halifax, Lévis, Victoria and Ottawa/Gatineau. Over 460 personnel are currently employed by Weir at NETE, supporting the Royal Canadian Navy and DND with test and evaluation services in a wide variety of technical areas.

What you’ll do

Analysis: Conduct System Safety & Environment Engineering analysis across the entire RCD Capability, using various formal methods, to identify hazards, quantify risks, support safety assurance and change impact assessment, and recommend mitigation solutions compliant with Canadian Law, DND Policy & Regulations, and International Standards, such as IEC 61508, IEC 62061, and ISO 13849.
Process Development: Providing support to lifecycle phase reviews, supporting system safety engineering working Groups, and implementing standards and processes such as those defined in US MIL-STD-882E (Military Standard) and Def-Stan 00-056 (UK MoD Defence Standard).
Technical Documentation: Development and review of technical documentation, such as Safety Management Plans, Hazard Logs, Hazard Management Assessment Reports, Safety Case Reports, System Requirement Specifications, Interface Control Documents, System Design Descriptions.
Support to client: Maintaining positive, friendly, collaborative relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders. Liaison with subject matter experts, DND customers and suppliers.
Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture.

What you’ll bring

We value what you can do - not just where you’ve been. If you meet the goals of the role, we want to hear from you.

Mandatory: Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.
Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Mandatory: Skilled in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels (both in-person and electronically) with peers, supervisors, and clients. Capable of drafting reports and technical correspondence.

Desirable: Familiarity with data modelling languages and MBSE frameworks such as UML, SysML, DODAF, DNDAF and UAF.
