Original job description

Summer Veterinary Student

Two Full-Time Seasonal Positions | Spring/Summer 2027

Westhills Equine Veterinary Services | Parkland County, Alberta

Launch your equine veterinary career alongside a team committed to teaching, mentorship, and exceptional patient care.

Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is seeking two enthusiastic veterinary students to join our team for the Spring and Summer of 2027.

More than a summer job, this is an opportunity to learn alongside experienced equine veterinarians and RVTs in a progressive practice intentionally designed to support hands-on learning, clinical mentorship, and professional growth. Throughout the summer, you'll gain meaningful experience across equine hospital medicine, reproduction, sports medicine, preventive care, and urgent care while developing the confidence and skills to prepare you for clinical practice.

If you're passionate about equine medicine, eager to learn, and excited to be part of a collaborative team, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Westhills?

Our goal is to make exceptional equine care sustainable - for horses, for the people who love them, and for the people who provide it.

Westhills is a comprehensive equine reproduction and wellness centre serving horses and their owners through advanced reproductive medicine, foaling and neonatal care, sports medicine, preventive care, hospital medicine, and client-only urgent care. We believe the future of equine medicine begins with investing in the next generation of veterinarians.

When you join Westhills EVS, you become part of a small, close-knit team that values curiosity, initiative, collaboration, and lifelong learning. Rather than functioning as extra labour, our summer students are welcomed as learners and active members of the clinical team.

Throughout the summer you'll benefit from:

Structured mentorship from experienced equine veterinarians and RVTs.
Progressive hands-on learning tailored to your year of training, demonstrated competency, and regulatory scope.
Exposure to hospital medicine, reproduction, foaling and neonatal care, sports medicine, preventive medicine, and urgent care.
Opportunities to participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, and day-to-day decision making.
A supportive team culture that encourages questions, curiosity, and continuous learning.
Meaningful clinical experiences that help prepare you for externships, internships, and your future veterinary career.
State of the art facilities

About the Role

As a Summer Veterinary Student, you'll work alongside our veterinarians, RVTs and assistants to support patient care while building practical clinical skills in a supportive learning environment.

You'll gain experience across multiple areas of equine practice while receiving direct teaching and progressively greater responsibility as your knowledge, confidence, and competency develop.

You'll assist with patient care, diagnostics, treatments, and clinical workflow while learning how a collaborative equine hospital functions - from outpatient appointments to reproduction services, hospitalized patients and urgent care.

Every day offers opportunities to ask questions, participate in cases, and gain experience that extends well beyond the classroom.

You'll have opportunities to:

Safely handle and restrain equine patients
Assist with physical examinations, treatments, procedures, and nursing care under supervision
Prepare equipment and patients for diagnostics and procedures
Participate in sample collection and laboratory diagnostics within your level of training and supervision
Assist with medical records and clinical documentation
Support hospital, reproduction, and outpatient appointment services
Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, and teaching opportunities
Help maintain an organized, efficient hospital environment as part of completing patient care

What We're Looking For

Required

Currently enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program
Completion of at least first year prior to Summer 2027
Strong equine handling skills
Eligible to work in Alberta and meet any applicable ABVMA student registration requirements

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone who:

Has a genuine interest in equine medicine and reproduction.
Is excited to learn across hospital medicine, reproduction, sports medicine, and preventive care.
Demonstrates initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to ask questions.
Is dependable, professional, and eager to contribute to a collaborative team.
Communicates respectfully with clients and coworkers.
Enjoys working hard while embracing every learning opportunity.

What We Offer

This is a paid, full-time seasonal position designed to provide meaningful clinical experience while preparing students for future careers in equine practice.

Compensation: $16–18/hour, depending on year of training, equine experience, and demonstrated practical skills.

In addition, you'll receive:

Structured mentorship from experienced equine veterinarians and RVTs
Direct exposure to equine hospital medicine and case management
Experience in reproduction, sports medicine, preventive care, foaling, neonatal medicine, and urgent care
Progressive hands-on learning tailored to your competency and scope
Westhills-branded apparel
Consideration for future externship, internship, or associate opportunities where appropriate

Location

Westhills EVS is located just 10 minutes west of Stony Plain and 30 minutes west of Edmonton, with easy access from Highway 16.

Please note that reliable transportation is required, as our clinic is not accessible by public transit.

Join Our Team

If you're looking for more than just a summer job and want an experience that will challenge you, grow your confidence, and help shape your future as an equine veterinarian - we’d love to hear from you.

Join Westhills EVS and spend your summer learning alongside a team committed to exceptional equine medicine, meaningful mentorship, and developing the next generation of veterinary professionals.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
