Winnipeg School Division (WSD) nurtures a welcoming and inclusive culture of people committed to working together to inspire students to reach goals and achieve academic success. WSD is the largest school division in the Province of Manitoba with over 33,000 students and 5,000 employees. To ensure WSD’s continued success as a leader in education and innovation, we’re committed to finding and developing the right people to join our team.
The Building Department at WSD is responsible for coordinating the physical environment with the people and the work of the Division. Under the general direction of the Chief Superintendent, the Building Department delivers infrastructure needs of the Division in consultation with senior administration, school administrators and community advisory groups.
We are seeking a safety-oriented journeyperson to fill the role of Gasfitter. Working alongside our dedicated maintenance crew, you will manage preventative maintenance, testing, and system modifications on our large commercial hydronic heating loops and low-pressure steam boiler plants exceeding 400,000 BTUs.
Why Join the Winnipeg School Division Maintenance Team?
- Work-Life Balance: Predictable, steady schedule (Monday–Friday, daytime shifts).
- Premium Overtime Protection: Any required emergency callbacks or extension hours are paid out at double time as per the Local 254 agreement.
- Robust Public Sector Benefits: Excellent health, dental, and vision packages tailored for your long-term wellness.
- Exceptional Sick Leave Accumulation: Accrual of necessary protection days up to a maximum of 180 days.
- Long-Term Job Security: Steady, year-round maintenance infrastructure workloads unaffected by construction industry seasonal slumps.
- Boiler Plant Maintenance: Perform seasonal cleanings, complex diagnostic testing, and system overhauls on heavy-duty school heating loops and steam boilers.
- Controls & Safeguards: Diagnose, program, and maintain burner management systems (BMS), pneumatic or digital controls, flame safeguards, and low-water cut-off components.
- Piping Alterations: Install, alter, and service commercial gas delivery structures, regulators, and high-pressure lines safely under Manitoba Gas Codes.
- Project Estimation: Trace blueprints and schematics to accurately provide the Maintenance Supervisor with projected labour hours, material requirements, and component costs.
- School Site Collaboration: Coordinate seamlessly with school administrators, head caretakers, and fellow building tradespeople to ensure zero disruptions to student instruction.
- Trade Licensing: Completion of secondary education with a valid Manitoba Class "A" Gas Fitter License AND a matching Red Seal Journeyperson certification in a core piping trade (Steamfitter or Plumber is required).
- Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of related field experience reading blueprints, running structural diagnostics, and maintaining commercial/industrial boiler infrastructure.
- Legal Clearances: Must pass and maintain a clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry check before employment.
- Driving Record: Must hold a valid Manitoba 5F class driver's license.
- Power Engineering Asset: Possessing a valid Class 3 or 4 Power Engineer Certificate (or higher) is considered a distinct asset for managing institutional steam systems.
- Technology Proficiency: Basic efficiency in Microsoft Office systems is considered an asset for reporting.
