About The Company

Citylitics Inc. is a pioneering company dedicated to delivering predictive intelligence on infrastructure investments across North America. The company focuses on essential systems that influence our daily lives, including water, transportation, transit, roads, highways, broadband, and power. Recognized as a leader in infrastructure data analytics, Citylitics transforms millions of documents from over 40,000 cities, utilities, and public agencies into real-time market signals and high-value sales intelligence. Its platform enables infrastructure vendors, engineering firms, and construction companies to identify and pre-position for major opportunities earlier in the project lifecycle, fostering stronger relationships and influencing project scope before formal procurement processes begin.

Citylitics employs a sophisticated blend of AI agents, proprietary signals graphs, and daily human-in-the-loop workflows to ensure the delivery of nuanced and reliable insights. The platform seamlessly integrates with CRMs, ERPs, and data lakes, embedding actionable intelligence directly into sales workflows. The company's mission is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of infrastructure investments, ensuring critical needs are addressed proactively, ultimately benefiting communities through stronger, more resilient infrastructure. As a company at the forefront of applied AI, Citylitics offers a meaningful industry where employees can make a lasting impact while growing within a collaborative, results-driven environment.

About The Role

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Data Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in building and maintaining mission-critical data products that leverage AI to deliver customer-facing solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of data engineering best practices, experience with orchestration tools, data warehouses, and hands-on experience deploying large language models (LLMs) and agentic workflows into production environments. The successful applicant will own the design, development, and operation of scalable, reliable data pipelines utilizing GCP services such as Cloud Composer, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, and Vertex AI.

The role requires a collaborative mindset, sound engineering judgment, and adaptability to rapidly evolving AI tooling. This hybrid position is based out of Citylitics’ Toronto office and involves working in-office at least three days per week. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of infrastructure, data science, and AI, contributing to impactful projects that shape the future of infrastructure investments across North America.

Key responsibilities include leading pipeline orchestration, designing data models and dashboards, developing AI-powered workflows, and continuously improving data infrastructure. The role also involves close collaboration with analysts, product teams, and stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality data solutions that meet business needs.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL
  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or Software Engineer in a cloud environment
  • Experience building production data pipelines using orchestrators like Airflow or Cloud Composer
  • Strong knowledge of data warehousing solutions, particularly BigQuery
  • Hands-on experience with deploying LLM-powered features and pipelines, including prompting, structured outputs, and tool calling via APIs (e.g., Gemini, Claude, OpenAI)
  • Familiarity with agent patterns such as tool use, multi-step workflows, retrieval/RAG, and MCP, including their tradeoffs
  • Daily use of AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) with the judgment to review outputs critically
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms, preferably GCP
  • Ability to develop end-to-end data applications, including backend APIs and front-end interfaces (e.g., React, TypeScript) is a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on ambiguous problems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working closely with cross-functional teams

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of high-performance, reliable, and maintainable data pipelines using Airflow and BigQuery, from architecture and design through deployment and ongoing maintenance
  • Collaborate with data analysts and stakeholders to define requirements and design scalable data models and applications
  • Own end-to-end data products, including pipelines, models, backend APIs, and customer-facing dashboards and applications
  • Design and operate pipelines that utilize LLMs and agents to transform raw documents into structured, actionable data
  • Manage prompt and context design, tool and function calling, embeddings, retrieval, and structured outputs, ensuring production concerns like retries, idempotency, cost, and latency are addressed
  • Develop and maintain evaluation datasets, LLM‑as‑judge mechanisms, rule‑based QA checks, and benchmarks to monitor and improve model performance
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for data infrastructure, evaluating new technologies and best practices to enhance efficiency and reliability
  • Utilize AI coding agents daily for development, debugging, and documentation, shaping how the team leverages AI tools
  • Support other duties related to data engineering and AI workflows as assigned, contributing to a collaborative team environment

Benefits

  • Opportunity to make a tangible impact on infrastructure development and community resilience
  • Work with a disruptive, data-driven platform at the forefront of AI and infrastructure innovation
  • Engage in a fast-paced, agile environment with minimal bureaucracy, enabling rapid professional growth
  • Access to cutting-edge AI tools and a comprehensive data universe to enhance productivity and experimentation
  • Deep investment in employee development through coaching, skill-building, and internal promotion pathways

Equal Opportunity

We are proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, veteran status, or any other basis protected by federal, state, or local law.
