Original job description

About The Company

Opendoor is dedicated to revolutionizing the residential real estate market by leveraging innovative technology and data-driven solutions. Our mission is to tilt the world in favor of homeowners and aspiring homeowners by providing a modern, seamless, and transparent system of buying and selling homes. We believe homeownership is fundamental to building wealth, stability, and community, and we are committed to making this process more accessible and efficient for everyone. Through our end-to-end online platform, we have already helped thousands of individuals and families to achieve their real estate goals, and we continue to expand our impact by developing new tools and services that empower consumers and partners alike.

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join our team in a hybrid capacity, with four days onsite and one day remote. In this role, you will be at the forefront of transforming one of the world's largest and most complex markets - residential real estate - by harnessing data at an unprecedented scale. Your work will be integral to building innovative products, understanding customer behaviors, guiding strategic investments, managing risk, and driving business decisions. The position offers the opportunity to work on highly impactful projects, ranging from defining key metrics and designing experiments to evaluating new business opportunities and influencing high-stakes decisions.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Operations to translate data insights into actionable strategies. Your expertise will help shape the company's roadmap, improve customer experiences, and optimize financial performance. The role demands a combination of strong analytical skills, business acumen, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.

Qualifications

Deep expertise in statistical reasoning, including experimental design, hypothesis testing, and causal inference.
Proficiency in SQL and Python for analyzing large, complex datasets.
Experience with production data pipelines, distributed computing, and modern analytics tools.
Specialization in areas such as experimentation, causal inference, statistical analysis, forecasting, or optimization.
Proven ability to translate complex analyses into clear, actionable recommendations that impact business outcomes.
Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams and levels.
Previous experience as a data scientist, product analyst, applied scientist, economist, or in a similar quantitative role.
Ability to structure ambiguous problems, make methodological tradeoffs, and uphold high data quality standards.

Responsibilities

Translate ambiguous business questions into well-defined analytical problems with measurable outcomes.
Design and develop metrics, dashboards, and decision frameworks to monitor performance and identify opportunities.
Plan and analyze experiments, applying causal inference and rigorous methodologies when randomized trials are impractical.
Utilize statistical analysis, forecasting, and other quantitative techniques to evaluate potential opportunities and inform strategic decisions.
Manage projects end-to-end, including data discovery, validation, analysis, and impact assessment.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape product roadmaps and translate insights into tangible actions.
Effectively communicate findings, uncertainties, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical teams and executive leadership.

Benefits

Competitive salary aligned with experience and market standards.
Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans.
Flexible work arrangements with a hybrid onsite/remote setup.
Opportunities for professional growth and development within a rapidly expanding company.
Inclusive and collaborative work environment that values diversity and innovation.
Paid time off and holidays to support work-life balance.

Equal Opportunity

Opendoor is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or any other protected status. We believe that diverse teams foster innovation and are essential to our continued success.
