About P&P Optica

P&P Optica (PPO) is at the forefront of technological innovation, revolutionizing an age-old industry that impacts everyone globally: the food industry. By leveraging cutting-edge hardware, advanced software solutions, and vast datasets, PPO aims to enhance the safety and quality of the food we consume. Our approach involves a sophisticated integration of technology and data analytics to deliver real-time insights and improvements in food production processes. Our commitment to innovation and excellence positions us as a leader in transforming traditional food safety practices through scientific and technological advancements. We foster a dynamic, collaborative environment where creativity and technical expertise drive meaningful change in the industry.

About The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Machine Learning Developer to join our software team. This role is pivotal in designing, developing, and deploying machine learning models that analyze complex hyperspectral data streams in real time. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to build scalable, reliable, and efficient ML pipelines that operate inline on active food production belts. This position requires a detail-oriented professional with a strong focus on delivering production-quality models that meet rigorous accuracy and performance standards. The role offers an exciting opportunity to work within an Agile framework, contributing to innovative solutions that directly impact food safety and quality. The ideal candidate will have a passion for bridging the gap between research and production, ensuring that models are not only scientifically sound but also practically deployable and maintainable in a high-stakes environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a software developer with a focus on machine learning.
  • Proficiency in Python and its scientific ecosystem, including NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, and Scikit-Learn.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Strong understanding of handling high-dimensional, real-world sensor data, including identifying edge cases and anomalies.
  • Hands-on experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Knowledge of containerization tools such as Docker.
  • Experience with automated testing and deployment pipelines using CI/CD tools like GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.
  • Background in working within structured Agile/Scrum environments, capable of breaking down complex ML tasks into manageable deliverables.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize machine learning algorithms and data pipelines from prototype to production, focusing on real-time classification, segmentation, and regression of hyperspectral imaging data.
  • Apply software engineering best practices, including writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, adhering to coding standards and conducting code reviews.
  • Perform feature engineering by extracting, analyzing, and optimizing features from high-dimensional spectral datasets to ensure high model performance under real-time constraints.
  • Integrate ML components seamlessly into PPO’s broader software ecosystem, ensuring robustness and scalability.
  • Embrace an AI-first workflow, utilizing generative AI tools to automate routine tasks, accelerate development, and improve engineering efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists to validate models statistically, ensuring accuracy, safety, and generalization across diverse operational environments.
  • Implement continuous delivery practices, supporting iterative model improvements and ensuring timely deployment without compromising system stability.
  • Work with MLOps and DevOps teams to automate model training, testing, and deployment processes within CI/CD pipelines, maintaining strict version control and quality standards.
  • Participate actively in Agile ceremonies such as daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure team alignment and project momentum.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $115,000 - $120,000 CAD annually, based on experience and skills.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits for employees and dependents.
  • Flexible hybrid work model, with initial on-site onboarding and ongoing flexibility to work remotely or from the office.
  • Supportive and inclusive company culture that values diversity, collaboration, and personal growth.
  • Opportunities for ongoing learning through formal training, workshops, and hands-on projects.
  • Paid time off, including vacation days and flex days, to promote work-life balance.
  • A dynamic environment where innovation and curiosity are encouraged and celebrated.
