Original job description

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated analyst with a keen interest in data analytics, business intelligence, and artificial intelligence, and internal audit. In this role, you will work closely with other internal audit team members to apply data analytics and visualization throughout audit engagements. You will also use AI and other advanced analytics techniques to identify patterns and themes across audit and advisory engagements and support the analysis of potential systemic issues and root causes. If you have prior exposure to internal audit and solid data analytics, problem solving, and communication skills, we would like to hear from you!

Success in this role requires more than technical data expertise. We are looking for a systems thinker who understands the relationship between data and business, including how data can reveal risks, control gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The successful candidate will be curious about how the organization operates, able to connect insights across functions and processes, and committed to translating data into actionable insights.

How you’ll make a difference: You’ll help ensure WorkSafeBC is accomplishing its objectives by using data and technology to evaluate and improve risk management, control, and governance.

Where you’ll work

We serve the workers and employers across B.C., and we do that best when we're together. It's how we collaborate, learn from one another, and develop our people.

This role is currently designated as having a hybrid work arrangement.

This is a unionized role and is subject to the provisions of the Collective Agreement between the Workers’ Compensation Board of BC and the Compensation Employees’ Union.

This role is based in your assigned office.

Like everything we do, our work model continues to evolve to support those we serve. We remain committed to a primarily in-office model that strengthens our culture and helps us deliver our best work, while balancing flexibility and a positive employee experience.

As An Analytics Specialist On Our Team, You Will

  • Research, analyze, and evaluate a wide variety of auditable areas and processes across the organization
  • Extract and transform data from a variety of databases using tools such as SQL, Python, and PowerBI
  • Design reusable analytics to identify risks, anomalies, trends, and potential control failures, and support continuous monitoring
  • Automate repetitive audit activities to enhance productivity (e.g., data preparation, repeatable tests, and draft workpaper/report outputs) by building and maintaining reproducible scripts, prompts, and templates in line with established documentation and quality standards
  • Develop and improve complex analytical models (e.g. for evaluation, prediction, classification, prescription)
  • Develop and present data analyses and visualization that clearly communicate findings and provide management with actionable insigts
  • Share learnings and provide hands-on support to team members when using analytics and automation tools (e.g., explaining outputs, documenting steps, and helping with tool adoption)
  • Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviors expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking

We’re Looking For Someone Who Can

  • Independently plan, prioritize, schedule, monitor, and complete complex projects and activities while consistently meeting deadlines
  • Clearly and concisely present analysis results and recommendations in written reports, dashboards and verbally to individuals and groups of varying levels of expertise
  • Identify significant and relevant information from a variety of sources, collect and analyze data to develop, assess, and establish meaningful ways of grouping and transforming data to draw well-supported conclusions
  • Interpret, evaluate, infer, and explain business data, concepts, and significance, and develop alternatives and recommendations appropriate for the business
  • Apply quantitative and qualitative research methods (e.g. statistical analyses, data modeling, text mining, machine learning, predictive analytics, sampling, survey and questionnaire design)
  • Write scripts and formulas for extracting, compiling, and displaying information
  • Learn quickly how an organization operates and assess risks and controls across the organization, from enterprise-wide issues to specific processes
  • Apply professional skepticism, challenge assumptions respectfully, and pursue issues to their root cause, even in complex or difficult circumstances
  • Analyze new information as it emerges and adapt the analytical approach while maintaining focus on the engagement’s intended objectives
  • Translate audit objectives, risks, and business questions into appropriate analytical approaches, identifying the data, methods, assumptions, and limitations required to produce reliable evidence.

Your Background And Experience

  • A master’s degree in a quantitative-related discipline such as statistics/mathematics, operations research, big data, data science, computer science, information technology, finance, business, management information systems, or engineering.
  • A minimum of 12 months of recent directly related experience within five years in business intelligence, statistical analysis, strategic analysis, and/or advanced analytics.
  • Experience working in an internal audit function is preferred.
