Original job description
Senior or Principal Civil Engineer
Play an integral role in Worley Consulting’s Environmental & Sustainability business, helping clients solve complex civil engineering, liability management, remediation, and site restoration challenges. As part of our Liability Management & Restoration (LM&R) practice, you will develop practical, constructible solutions that protect people and the environment while creating long-term value for our clients.
You will work across multidisciplinary teams and support projects from feasibility and concept development through detailed design, construction, and closeout. Depending on your experience, you will also provide technical leadership, mentor developing professionals, and strengthen client relationships.
Purpose of the role
As a Senior or Principal Civil Engineer, you will lead and deliver civil engineering solutions for environmental remediation, landfill, closure, restoration, and related infrastructure projects across Canada.
You will combine civil design expertise with knowledge of construction, environmental requirements, and risk management to deliver safe, sustainable, cost-effective solutions. At the Principal level, you will take a greater role in technical leadership, complex project oversight, client advisory, and developing technical capability across the business.
Location
Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta
This is a full-time hybrid position with flexibility to work from our Calgary or Edmonton office and remotely, with project and field-based work as required.
You will be responsible for:
- Lead civil engineering analysis and design for landfill and capping systems, earthworks, grading, hydrology and drainage, roads, minor utilities, soil stabilization, remediation, and site restoration.
- Evaluate geotechnical, geological, hydrogeological, and hydrologic data, digital terrain models, aerial imagery, investigation results, and other project information to inform engineering decisions.
- Lead or contribute to projects from feasibility and conceptual design through detailed engineering, tendering, construction, and closeout.
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including Basis of Design documents, scopes of work, calculations, reports, specifications, drawings, work plans, and cost estimates.
- Interpret applicable environmental regulations, codes, standards, and investigation findings and incorporate requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Identify technical, construction, environmental, schedule, and delivery risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Provide onsite resident engineering services, including construction quality assurance and quality control, geotechnical sampling and testing oversight, field engineering, and technical problem-solving.
- Support construction administration through Field Instructions, Submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), Notices of Potential Change, Change Orders, and contractor coordination.
- Partner with Project Managers to deliver work safely and effectively while meeting quality, scope, schedule, budget, and risk objectives.
- Develop engineering budgets and total installed cost estimates to support proposals, project planning, and cost control.
- Build trusted client relationships and provide practical advice on technical risk, regulatory compliance, constructability, environmental stewardship, and project delivery.
- Collaborate with engineering, environmental, geotechnical, hydrogeological, construction, and project management teams to deliver integrated solutions.
- Mentor engineers and other professionals while promoting technical quality, knowledge sharing, safety, and continuous improvement.
What you’ll bring to the role:
Required qualifications and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligibility to obtain registration.
- 5 to 15+ years of relevant civil engineering experience, with technical and project leadership appropriate to the Senior or Principal level.
- Civil engineering experience on Canadian projects, preferably in Alberta and/or British Columbia.
- Experience supporting engineering projects through design and construction, including onsite engineering services.
- Working knowledge of applicable provincial environmental regulations, engineering codes, and standards relevant to landfill, remediation, closure, or restoration projects.
- Strong organizational and project delivery skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining safety and technical quality.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, project teams, regulators, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.
Preferred assets
