As a Civil/Materials Engineer-in-Training in Edmonton, you'll gain hands-on experience working on a diverse range of infrastructure, construction, and geotechnical projects that help shape communities across Alberta and beyond. Working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists, you'll build practical expertise in field investigations, construction monitoring, materials testing, and geotechnical engineering while developing a strong foundation for your professional career.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the field and is eager to learn by seeing projects firsthand. From observing construction activities to collecting critical site data, you'll gain the real-world experience needed to understand how engineering solutions are applied, tested, and delivered. Your Impact
Support civil, materials, and geotechnical engineering projects across a variety of sectors.
Perform construction monitoring activities, including excavations, subgrade inspections, shallow foundation inspections, and pile installation monitoring (cast-in-place concrete, driven steel, and other foundation systems).
Participate in geotechnical drilling programs, soil logging, and field investigations.
Assist project managers and technical staff with site investigations, data collection, and project coordination.
Prepare field reports and contribute to the development of geotechnical reports, technical memoranda, and proposals.
Conduct laboratory testing and analysis as required.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality technical services to clients.
Travel to project sites throughout Alberta, with opportunities to support projects across Canada based on business needs and individual interest.
Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve field-related challenges efficiently and professionally.
Represent WSP in the field with professionalism, technical competence, and integrity.
The Skills that Set You Apart
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
6 months to 2 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-op placements, or summer employment in materials engineering, geotechnical engineering, consulting, construction, geological fieldwork, or resource development projects.
Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's licence (or equivalent) with a satisfactory driving record.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and challenging terrain.
Physically capable of lifting equipment and hiking on active construction and remote project sites.
Willingness to travel regularly to project locations.
CSA-approved safety boots and commitment to safe work practices.
Ability to work effectively in field, laboratory, and office environments.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing project demands.

Compensation
AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $32.20 – $43.30 per hour
MB & ON: $29.40 – $41.00 per hour
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $29.10 – $39.20 per hour
