The Opportunity
Build the Future With Us - Take your health and safety expertise into the field and help support safe project delivery in Canada’s North.
This field-based role will support remediation projects and ice road construction in the Northwest Territories. Working as part of the WSP field team and reporting to the Project Manager, you’ll provide hands-on health and safety support to crews while helping ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable requirements and project-specific health and safety programs.
This is a rotation-based position at a remote Arctic project location near Inuvik or Tuktoyaktuk, NT, with 12-hour workdays while on rotation (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off). Travel to the project location is paid for by WSP. The assignment is anticipated to begin in January 2027 and continue through March/April 2027, weather dependent, with the potential to extend.
Your Impact
- Champion safe field execution by working directly with project supervisors, WSP personnel, contractors, and field crews to identify hazards and implement practical controls.
- Support compliance with applicable health and safety legislation, regulations, codes and standards, along with WSP and client-specific requirements.
- Develop, review and maintain project-specific health and safety documentation, including H&S programs, emergency response plans, work plans and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
- Assess and control field risks through workplace observations and inspections, JSA preparation and review, Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA) reviews, and corrective actions.
- Lead site-level safety activities, including orientations, worker instruction and training, daily tailgate meetings, weekly safety meetings, and coordination across multi-employer worksites.
- Respond decisively to unsafe conditions, taking prudent action to reduce hazards and suspending operations when work threatens the health or safety of workers or the public.
- Investigate and document safety events, including near misses and incidents, complete root cause analyses, and maintain required safety reports, records, statistics, person-hours and equipment hours.
- Represent health and safety with clients and project stakeholders through meetings, inspections, Joint Health and Safety Committee activities where applicable, and clear communication of project safety performance.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- A minimum of 3 years of health and safety experience, preferably supporting field projects in northern or cold-climate environments.
- Demonstrated experience implementing health and safety programs and promoting a strong safety culture on active project sites.
- Practical knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, JSAs, FLRAs, inspections, incident reporting and root cause analysis.
- Valid First Aid Level 1 or equivalent, or the ability to obtain it within two weeks of employment, together with valid WSCC Supervisor OHS Familiarization training, or the ability to successfully complete the training.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver health and safety orientations, training and presentations and communicate technical safety requirements clearly.
- Ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, field crews and other third parties in a multi-employer project environment.
- Ability to work a remote Arctic rotation with 12-hour workdays, operate in field conditions, and wear all required PPE, including a respirator where required.
- A valid full-class driver’s licence and working proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
