Original job description

At Wyloo, we believe in a future that is truly sustainable – where technology unlocks new horizons and green energy preserves our planet for every generation to come. We are committed to enabling a safe supply of high-grade critical materials from extraction to processing, using the highest standards of environmental sustainability that make our operations the benchmark for mines of the future. Through our partnerships with local and First Nation communities, we ensure our success means progress for everyone. We have assets in Australia, mining projects in Canada, and a strong growth pipeline with exploration across both countries.

In Canada, Wyloo is advancing its flagship Eagle’s Nest Project in the Ring of Fire region of northern Ontario, one of the best, undeveloped high-grade nickel, copper and platinum group element deposits in the world. Our Ring of Fire portfolio also includes world-class chromite deposits. In addition, we are evaluating the potential development of a downstream battery materials facility in City of Greater Sudbury. Wyloo’s Canadian projects are supported by offices in Toronto and Thunder Bay.

Your opportunity at Wyloo

Our Principal, Underground Mining Engineer will be Wyloo’s definitive subject matter expert on mine planning, value optimisation, design and execution strategy for the Eagle’s Nest Project. Based in either Toronto or Thunder Bay and reporting to the VP, Projects, you will shape the technical direction of one of the highest-grade undeveloped nickel sulphide deposits in the world as it moves through Advanced Exploration and into the main project.

Working alongside the project team, you will lead stope optimisation, mine design, geotechnical and underground infrastructure planning. You will set the engagement strategy with consultants and contractors, review their outputs for technical soundness and commercial robustness and build mining capability within the team as the project advances.

Why this role matters

The decisions you make on mine design, scheduling, infrastructure and execution strategy will shape Eagle’s Nest for its entire life. Your judgement on where to push for value, where to de-risk, and how to balance capital cost, operating cost and schedule will directly influence the project’s economics, its ability to attract funding and its safe, successful delivery. This is a chance to apply deep mining engineering expertise to a project of global significance, and to help shape how one of the world’s most important critical minerals developments is built.

What you’ll bring to Wyloo

You bring 15 or more years of progressive experience in mine planning, operations, project development and study management, ideally gained within an owner-operator mining company and preferably in underground northern operations. You hold a degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent and hold a Professional Engineering designation in Ontario or can obtain one.

Your technical foundation is strong across underground mine development, life-of-mine plan optimisation, mine infrastructure, ore handling and mineral processing. You have high-level proficiency in Deswik (with Surpac, Vulcan, Datamine and Ventsim desirable), and sound knowledge of rock mechanics, ventilation design, drill and blast operations, and maintenance planning in underground operations. You understand mine economics and financial evaluation, and know how to work capex–opex trade-offs, cut-off grade analysis and cost modelling to drive value. Experience with BEV and other emerging underground technologies would be welcomed, as would a strong working knowledge of Canadian statutory requirements at Provincial and Federal level.

You are a trusted technical voice who leads with judgement rather than process, builds collaborative relationships across teams and stakeholders, and communicates complex technical ideas clearly to a range of audiences. You take ownership of outcomes, apply sound judgement in fast-moving environments and bring the kind of practical, best-for-project thinking that keeps a project moving forward with integrity.

Why you’ll love working at Wyloo

Wyloo is a values-driven organisation committed to responsible development and building strong teams. We operate in a fast-moving and evolving environment, where people are trusted to take ownership, manage competing priorities and apply sound judgement as things develop.

We offer competitive remuneration, genuine flexibility, paid parental leave, wellbeing initiatives, professional development opportunities and a range of employee benefits and support services to help you grow and support life outside of work.

We believe in the potential of every individual and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where people feel respected, supported, and valued. Diverse perspectives make us stronger, and we encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, including Indigenous Peoples, women, persons with disabilities, and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
