Original job description

XA Security is one of Western Canada's leading event security and crowd management companies. We work the biggest events in the province, including festivals, stadium shows and the Calgary Stampede, along with year-round static, mobile and parking operations. Our workforce is several hundred strong and grows past 700 in the busy season.

One thing that makes us different: we built our own operations platform. Digital XA handles our scheduling, timekeeping, payroll, invoicing and HR. We don't send payroll out to a bureau. It runs on our own system, and the person in this role is the one who runs it.

The Role

XA has grown fast and our people operations need to catch up. You'll be doing two main things.

First, building out our HR function. A lot of good pieces are already in place, like digital onboarding, certification tracking and a structured applicant pipeline. We need someone to turn those pieces into real processes: policies, an employee handbook, performance and discipline frameworks, leave management, benefits administration, WCB and OHS compliance, and the daily judgment calls that come with a large hourly workforce. There's no playbook to inherit here. You'll be writing it.

Second, administering payroll on Digital XA. Biweekly runs across field and administrative cycles, source deductions and CRA remittances, Records of Employment, T4s, garnishments, adjustments, vacation accruals and statutory holiday pay. The platform does the math, but you own the accuracy, the deadlines, and the answer when a team member calls about their cheque. You'll also work directly with our development team, so when you find a gap or a better way to do something, it gets built.

What You'll Do

  • Run end-to-end biweekly payroll for a large hourly workforce plus salaried admin staff on Digital XA
  • Handle CRA remittances, ROEs, T4 season and year-end reconciliation
  • Apply the Alberta Employment Standards Code (overtime, statutory holiday pay, rest rules, deductions) and keep our practices ahead of it
  • Design and document HR processes for onboarding, certification compliance under Alberta security licensing, performance, discipline and offboarding
  • Administer our group benefits plan, including enrolment, changes and reconciliation with the carrier
  • Manage our WCB account, claims and return-to-work
  • Be the trusted first point of contact for employee questions about pay, records and policy
  • Work with operations and the platform team to keep improving how HR and payroll actually work here

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of progressive HR and payroll experience, including at least 2 years running payroll start to finish rather than feeding inputs to a bureau
  • PCP or PLP designation from the National Payroll Institute, or actively working toward it
  • Solid working knowledge of Alberta employment standards and Canadian payroll legislation (CPP, EI, income tax, WCB)
  • Experience with a large hourly or shift-based workforce. Hospitality, events, security or staffing backgrounds all fit well.
  • Comfort with software. You don't need to code, but you'll spend your day in a modern platform and help shape it, and you should be strong in spreadsheets.
  • Discretion and sound judgment. You'll be handling SINs, banking details and personal records for hundreds of people.
  • A CPHR designation, or progress toward one, is an asset

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary starting at $80,000, based on experience
  • Group benefits plan
  • Real input into the tools you use every day. When you suggest an improvement, it usually ships.
  • Front-row involvement in the biggest live events in Alberta
