The Leadership Trainer White Water facilitates leadership development programs that build participants’ self-awareness, group-development skills, resilience, confidence, and technical outdoor skills. The position works with another trainer to support participants during on-site programming and wilderness canoe trips, including mentoring participants in whitewater canoeing. Trainers provide 24/7 supervision during the program and reside in the same accommodations as participants, providing ongoing instruction, mentorship, and support. The role works with the Outdoor Pursuits team to prepare and deliver safe, high-quality experiences and contributes to camp operations when not assigned to a program.

In this role, you will:

Facilitate and deliver leadership development activities, learning sessions, and debriefs that support participants’ self-awareness, group development, and hard and soft skill growth.
Coach Leadership Participants to understand how their actions affect group well-being and to take constructive action to improve themselves and the situation.
Plan and execute high-quality on-site and wilderness canoe trip programming with support from the Outdoor Pursuits team, including menu planning, food preparation, gear organization, and risk management.
Supervise program participants while on-site and on trips, including during overnight accommodations.
Maintain, inventory, prepare, and repair assigned equipment to ensure group equipment and safety needs are met before and during trips and in accordance with safety protocols.
Build relationships with members, staff, volunteers, community partners, participants, and participant families, including attending the Leadership Information Day in late May.
Serve as an active resource support staff member when not delivering a program, including dish support, gear repair, and food dehydrating.
Act as a positive and inclusive role model for participants and staff by following YMCA camp guidelines, policies, procedures, and Ontario Camps Association guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

First Aid and CPR certification that meets Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board requirements and YMCA policies.
National Lifeguard certification, Wilderness First Responder certification, Whitewater Rescue Technician certification, Food Handler’s Certificate, Moving Water 2 certification, and ORCKA Canoe Tripping Level 3 certification, valid until at least the last day of the contract.
Comfort and experience leading an overnight trip in a wilderness setting.
Extensive knowledge of canoe and kayak tripping, including whitewater.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to change.
Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment to achieve optimal results.
Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, including the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with members, staff, and volunteers.
Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to both inexperienced and seasoned staff.
Ability to deliver feedback to participants in a timely and constructive manner.
Minimum age of 19 by the start of the contract.
Ability to perform frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), bending, stooping, pushing, carrying, and pulling.
Flexibility to work days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging.

If you are interested in this position and do not possess the necessary certifications and require assistance in attaining them, please indicate in your cover letter. Certain certifications may be eligible for Financial Assistance through the YMCA of Greater Toronto, or through referral to additional programs outside the YMCA that offer similar support. Eligibility is to be determined on an individual basis.

What you need to succeed:

Commitment to the YMCA’s Mission, Vision and Values.
A commitment to uphold strong, safeguarding practices that protect the safety, well-being, inclusion of children, and youth.
YMCA Competencies: Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter.
