About the Role:

YMCA of Northern Alberta is seeking a Mentor to join our Mentorship and Gang Solutions (MAGS) team. The Mentor will empower youth to make positive life changes by building trusting mentor relationships and providing guidance, encouragement, and meaningful alternatives to gang involvement. The successful candidate will be seconded to Edmonton Police Service (EPS) to actively engage with youth referred to the program. They will be responsible for meeting with youth in custody and in the community, offering guidance, encouragement, and positive alternatives. They will also collaborate with families, community partners, and a multidisciplinary team of professionals to coordinate supports that promote successful long-term outcomes for youth.

This is a full-time role (40 hrs/week) with benefits

Four (4) day work week (Monday - Thursday, 7:30am – 4:30pm) and based out of The Wîcêhtowin (Union Building)

Responsibilities:

Build trusting relationships with youth through regular mentoring sessions in custody and community settings, providing guidance and alternative supports.
Submit daily updates to the EPS Program Coordinator outlining plans, youth interactions, progress, successes, and concerns.
Maintain accurate and timely case documentation, including daily case notes, reports, and weekly highlights and upload in designated systems.
Participate in case conferences, transition planning, and multidisciplinary meetings to support coordinated service delivery for youth.
Assist with transportation of assigned youth to and from court, probation, and other programming requirements, using personal vehicle.
Deliver and support restorative, recreational, and individualized programming, including outdoor education and group activities.
Collaborate with agency staff and leadership to support program development, service improvement, and best practices.
Contribute to achieving the overall goals and objectives of the MAGS Program.

Qualifications:

Experience working with youth involved in the criminal justice system, gangs, or violence.
Ability to assist participants with challenges related to addictions, mental health, and overall well-being
Understand the power of relationships and passionate about positive influence.
Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Strong listening and communication skills, verbal and written.
Must be empathetic, non-judgmental and flexible within daily activities.
Ability to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check and Child Intervention Check.
Enhanced Security Clearance through Edmonton Police Service
A valid Alberta Drivers License with access to a reliable motor vehicle (current insurance and registration with appropriate coverage required)
Proficiency in the use of computers to support service delivery and working with related word processing and database management software applications.
Flexibility to work evenings and travel within the local community for appointments and events.
