Who we need
Reporting to the Director IT Security and Infrastructure we are hiring a Systems Administrator to join our IT team at Yorkville University. As our new Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for maintaining, supporting, and optimizing our hybrid IT infrastructure, including on-premises servers, Microsoft 365, Azure cloud services, and network systems. You will manage day-to-day system administration, configure and maintain network equipment, and provide Level 2 technical support, troubleshooting and resolving complex issues to ensure reliable and secure IT operations. Working closely with the IT and application teams, you will proactively identify opportunities to improve system performance, strengthen infrastructure, and support the technology needs of our employees across the organization.
This is an existing full-time role, working 2 days remotely and 3 days on-site at 85 Richmond Street West, with a move to our new headquarters at 120 Bloor Street East in Fall 2027 with occasional travel to other sites as needed.
What’s in it for you
Career growth. You will join a growing IT team with a clear opportunity to advance into a Lead role as the team evolves. You will work with a supportive manager who values initiative, invests in developing talent, and encourages you to take on new challenges. This is an opportunity to build on your technical experience, expand your responsibilities, and take meaningful steps toward the next stage of your career.
Technical breadth and hands-on experience. You will gain exposure to a diverse hybrid IT environment, working across Azure cloud services, Microsoft 365, on-premises servers, network infrastructure, and automation. Rather than focusing solely on routine support requests, you will tackle complex technical challenges, resolve escalations, and contribute to infrastructure improvements that strengthen how our systems operate.
Impact and collaboration. You will play an important role in keeping the technology that supports our employees and academic operations running reliably and securely. Working closely with internal IT and application teams, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of technical issues, contribute ideas, and see the direct impact of your work across the organization.
How you will make an impact
- Manage and maintain hybrid IT infrastructure. You will oversee the day-to-day administration, maintenance, and performance of on-premises servers, virtual machines, and cloud-based systems. You will monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and ensure our infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and available to support business operations.
- Administer Microsoft and Azure environments. You will manage Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams, as well as Active Directory, user provisioning, group policies, and access permissions. You will configure and maintain Azure cloud resources, including compute, networking, and storage, to support evolving organizational needs.
- Support and optimize network infrastructure. You will install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot network equipment, including switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points. You will support network connectivity and performance across our locations, providing hands-on assistance with hardware installations and infrastructure maintenance as needed.
- Resolve complex technical issues. You will act as an escalation point for Level 2 support, investigating and resolving issues that require deeper technical expertise. Working closely with the IT and application teams, you will identify root causes, implement practical solutions, and help prevent recurring problems.
- Drive continuous improvement and automation. You will proactively identify opportunities to improve system reliability, security, and operational efficiency. You will use scripting tools such as PowerShell to automate routine tasks, streamline processes, and contribute to improvements in monitoring, backups, and system maintenance.
- Collaborate and uphold best practices. You will work with internal teams to support technology needs, communicate technical information clearly, and maintain accurate system documentation. You will follow established IT service management processes and security standards to ensure changes, incidents, and infrastructure assets are managed consistently.
You bring
- The experience. You have hands-on experience administering and supporting hybrid IT environments, including on-premises servers, virtual machines, cloud infrastructure, and network systems. You are comfortable managing day-to-day operations, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and taking ownership of Level 2 escalations through to resolution.
- The Microsoft and cloud expertise. You have practical experience administering Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Azure cloud services, including identity and access management, user provisioning, and cloud resource configuration. You understand how these technologies work together to support a secure, reliable IT environment.
- The networking skills. You have a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and LAN/WAN environments. You have hands-on experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- The technical problem-solving skills. You can investigate complex system issues, identify root causes, and implement practical, lasting solutions. You are familiar with IT service management processes and ticketing systems and understand the importance of documentation, security, and change management. You have experience with PowerShell scripting or similar automation tools to improve efficiency and reduce repetitive tasks.
- The initiative and collaboration. You take a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues rather than waiting for problems to escalate. You communicate technical information clearly, collaborate effectively with colleagues across different teams, and are comfortable balancing independent work with shared priorities. You are curious, adaptable, and motivated to continue expanding your technical knowledge.
- The flexibility. You are comfortable working onsite as part of a hybrid team and travelling to other locations when needed to support hardware installations and infrastructure maintenance. You hold a valid driver's licence. Azure or networking certifications are an asset but are not required.
