Original job description

About Zaya:

Zaya Care is a venture-backed startup on a mission to establish a new standard of preventive and restorative health. Independent specialty practices are where patients actually get better, yet they've always been underserved by the system built around them. Zaya changes that by giving practices the infrastructure to focus on care while we handle everything else, building toward a world where preventive and restorative care is coordinated, measurable, and accessible.

At Zaya, our team is action-oriented, egoless, and highly communicative, with a deep commitment to our mission and our customers. We’re a small team, and each of us plays a significant role. Everything you do will have an impact on the company.

About the role:

As the Engineering Lead at Zaya, you will own the company’s codebase and technical infrastructure. You’ll be accountable for the architecture, quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability of the systems our practices depend on every day.

This is a hands-on engineering role. You’ll write code, make core architectural and technical decisions, and review the work of other engineers. You’ll lead the engineering team and establish the standards and development practices that allow the team to move quickly without compromising the quality of the system.

You’ll work closely with company leadership and partners across product, RCM, operations, sales, and customer support to translate business and product requirements into technical systems that can scale. You’ll own technical execution from design through production, including delivery timelines, system reliability, and the technical tradeoffs required along the way.

We expect the Engineering Lead to have strong technical judgment, to understand the systems they own in depth, and to use modern engineering tools - including AI-assisted development tools - where they materially improve engineering velocity and quality.

What you’ll do:

Own the long-term technical vision and roadmap, setting technical direction, evolving the architecture, and making the tradeoffs needed to balance near-term delivery with scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability as the company grows
Set the standard for how Engineering operates, establishing strong engineering practices, processes, and technical standards that enable the team to move quickly while maintaining quality and reliability
Run delivery end to end, breaking down scope, setting realistic timelines, and keeping projects on schedule
Stay hands-on in the codebase, writing and reviewing code
Partner with product, RCM, operations, sales, and support to turn business needs into technical plans
Hire, coach, and grow engineers, giving clear feedback and creating room for people to level up

About you:

6+ years building software, including 2+ years leading or managing engineers
Hands-on full-stack architect: You design and build systems end to end, from React/Next.js to backend services, APIs, databases, and integrations, and still take pride in shipping production code. You have hands-on DevOps experience, including CI/CD, deployments, monitoring, and production operations. You make sound architecture decisions under real constraints and know which shortcuts are worth taking.
Production AWS and healthcare-grade security: Hands-on experience architecting, securing, and operating production systems on AWS (VPC, ECS/EKS, EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch). Strong in IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation), Docker, and CI/CD. You build secure, scalable, cost-efficient infrastructure and own production reliability - monitoring, incident response, DR/backups, and performance. Experience running healthcare systems with PHI (HIPAA, SOC 2, encryption, access controls, audit logging) is essential.
People-first and AI-native: You give direct feedback, measure yourself by how much your engineers grow, and have a real point of view on where AI tooling helps and where it doesn’t.
Strategy to execution: You make confident calls on scope and sequencing, unblock yourself and your team, and turn messy problems into a clear path forward. You move easily between architecture, code review, and stakeholder conversations, bridging strategy and execution, and explain technical trade-offs clearly to engineers and non-technical partners alike.
Authorized to work in Canada and based in Toronto, ON

Our current tech stack:

Front-end: React, NextJs, Typescript
Back-end: Node.js, Typescript, Prisma, TypeGraphQL, Postgres, Redis, DynamoDB
Cloud infrastructure: AWS
Tools: Claude, GitHub, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Datadog, Grafana, Auth0

Benefits and compensation:

Competitive salary, equity and growth opportunities
Hybrid work and paid travel to NYC for company onsites
Unlimited PTO and a company-wide winter holiday week
Early-stage impact: join at Seed and help shape the company from the ground up

Our values:

Move with urgency and focus: We act quickly and prioritize what matters most. Speed is important, but never at the cost of clarity or impact.
Own the outcome, start to finish: You are accountable for delivering results. If something’s off track, raise it early and drive it to resolution.
Be the expert in your craft: Strive to deeply understand your domain. Aim to be the person others turn to for insight, execution, and leadership.
Work as one aligned team: We collaborate closely, communicate openly, and support each other. Success is shared, not siloed.
Feedback fuels excellence: If something’s unclear, off-track, or going well - say it early and with care. We name issues before they fester, assume good intent, and stay open when feedback comes our way. It’s how we grow, improve and build a culture of trust.
Build for continuity: Set up your work so the team can succeed even if you're out. Strong systems don’t rely on one person. They create long-term clarity, consistency, and impact.
