Original job description

About Zehr Group

Zehr Group has been a trusted name in Waterloo Region since 1978. We are a full-service development, construction, and property management company. We've helped reshape downtown Kitchener-Waterloo and its innovation district with modern condos, rental communities, townhomes and landmark redevelopments, including STRIDE on Franklin, STRIDE on Union and the revival of Kitchener's historic Huck Glove factory.

Zehr Construction Inc., our construction management arm, delivers commercial, institutional, industrial and multi-residential projects across Southern Ontario. We are COR-certified, and everything we build is guided by our values:

Integrity, Innovation, Collaboration, Resilience and Community.

The Role

We're looking for a Payroll & Accounting Administrator to keep payroll accurate and on time and to support our accounting team.

Reporting to the Controller and working from our St. Jacobs office, you'll spend about 60% of your time on payroll, running weekly and bi-weekly cycles in Payworks and Sage 300 CRE. The rest of your week goes to accounting support: accounts payable, reconciliations, job costing and month-end. As you gain experience with our business and the construction industry, the role will take on more responsibility over time.

What You'll Do

Payroll

· Run weekly and bi-weekly payroll in Payworks for salaried, hourly and unionized employees

· Collect and verify timesheets, working with site superintendents and managers

· Apply collective agreement rules for wage rates, overtime, premiums, stat holidays and union dues

· Reconcile payroll registers and fix errors before pay goes out

· Review CRA, EHT and WSIB remittances, plus monthly union pension and health and welfare trust fund remittances

· Maintain payroll records, including vacation balances, deductions, garnishments and benefits

· Prepare Records of Employment and year-end T4 slips, and answer payroll questions promptly

· Support CRA, WSIB and union trust fund audits

Accounting Support

· Process accounts payable, from invoice coding and entry to payment runs

· Reconcile vendor statements, payroll accounts and bank accounts

· Allocate labour costs to projects in Sage 300 CRE for accurate job costing

· Prepare payroll reports and labour cost analysis for management

· Track subcontractor WSIB clearances, insurance certificates and holdbacks

· Support the Controller with month-end close

What You Bring

· At least 3 years of combined payroll and accounting experience, ideally in construction

· A college diploma or university degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Payroll or a related field

· A working knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation and compliance

· Experience with unionized payroll, ideally in the construction trades

· A solid grasp of bookkeeping, accounts payable and account reconciliations

· Payroll and accounting system experience; Payworks strongly preferred, Sage 300 CRE, TimberScan and HH2 anasset

· Basic/Intermediate Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office

· Strong communication, a customer-service mindset and a sharp eye for detail

· Discretion with confidential employee and payroll information

· The ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team

Assets - PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) designation, completed or in progress, and knowledge of the construction industry.
