Who We are Looking for
We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, even if you do not meet every qualification listed below.
We are seeking a highly technical, hands-on problem solver to join our growing team as an Installation Technician. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with complex systems, values precision and quality, and is comfortable in a customer-facing environment with routine international travel.
This role includes an initial approximately six-month, hands-on training period with our Production team before transitioning into independent field installation work. During this time, you will build a deep understanding of how our cryogenic systems are designed, assembled, tested, and quality-controlled - knowledge that is essential for long-term success in the field.
The ideal candidate is patient, curious, and motivated to invest time upfront to master the technology before working independently. This role is integral to our success as we continue to commercialize and scale our core products.
What Will You Do
Working closely with our Production and Service Leads, you will support the full lifecycle of Zero Point Cryogenics systems - from in-house assembly and testing through to global installation, commissioning, and service.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building a strong understanding of how cryostats are designed, assembled, and tested to enable effective field troubleshooting and repair.
- Traveling internationally to install, test, commission, and service cryogenic systems at customer facilities.
- Training new and existing customers on the safe and effective use of their Zero Point Cryogenics refrigeration systems.
- Performing scheduled maintenance and warranty service work throughout the lifecycle of each system.
- Recommending maintenance and service items based on system condition, usage, and best practices.
- Performing electrical wiring, routing, labeling, termination, and soldering of 14–36 gauge wires, electrical connectors, and low-temperature coax cables.
- Installing, testing, and troubleshooting electrical, instrumentation, and process equipment.
- Using hand and power tools to assemble cryostats and fabricate metal components during production and installation activities.
- Taking accurate measurements using multimeters, tape measures, calipers, helium leak detectors, and digital thermometers.
- Reading and interpreting manufacturer manuals, drawings, and quality control specifications.
- Completing installation, service, and administrative documentation using Odoo, HubSpot, and Google Workspace.
- Performing other related duties as assigned, with responsibilities evolving based on operational needs.
Preferred Experience and Education
- Electrician Trade Certification, Heavy Equipment Journeyperson (3rd/4th year completed), Laboratory Technician, or Instrumentation Journeyperson would be considered an asset.
- BSc. with a specialization in physics degree is preferred, or Engineering degree would be considered an asset.
- Customer service experience in a technical or advisory role would be preferred.
- A candidate with direct experience operating or installing low temperature physics equipment or condensed matter physics experiments would be considered a priority candidate.
- Experience sourcing technical materials for electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation, or other applications.
- Vacuum and/or refrigeration experience.
- Electrical/mechanical shop or similar manufacturing experience would be preferred.
- Excellent time-management and task-prioritization.
- Strong documentation skills for internal and external technical materials.
- Experience with multimeters and other testing equipment used in the startup and commissioning process.
- Intermediate or greater experience using Autodesk Inventor and Google workspace.
- Ability to perform daily planning and organizational practices while working with a high-degree of independence and integrating cohesively within the team.
- Ability to think critically, multitask, and quickly adapt to new technical challenges.
- Candidates who have successfully completed PHYS 415 – “Introduction to Condensed Matter Physics” (or equivalent 400 level introductory condensed matter course at other institutes) will be prioritized.
- Candidates who have operated a dilution refrigerator will receive top priority.
What Will You Bring
- Motivation and work ethic to stay engaged in a fast paced, creative problem-solving environment.
- A client-first mindset and sound judgment when working on-site.
- Willingness to take on evolving responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas and challenges with a collaborative attitude.
- High accountability for technical quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Willingness to take on unfamiliar tasks and to help the team learn what you figure out.
- Openness to respectfully take guidance and training from the Technical Leads, Machinists, and Physicists.
- A sense of ownership and respect for shared shop and workspaces.
- Experience using hand and power tools including drivers, wrenches, wire strippers, soldering irons, and tube benders.
- Familiarity with various types of fasteners, wiring, materials, and chemicals.
- Ability to take accurate dimensional measurements using a variety of measuring tools.
- Excellent work history and solid references.
- Ability to lift 30 kg, work overhead and work in confined spaces inside the control cabinet.
