Job Title: Business Analyst (EMR / Health IT)
Location: Burnaby Office
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Business Analyst to support the evolution of our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) platform. This role is critical in bridging clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders by researching new feature ideas and enhancements, synthesizing feedback, and translating findings into clear, actionable requirements and user stories for product and engineering teams.
The ideal candidate is analytical, communicative, and detail-oriented, with experience working on complex software products - ideally in healthcare - and a strong grasp of structured requirements documentation.
Additionally we would like someone who can think beyond requirements gathering to help define how success is measured, including KPIs and, where applicable, how emerging technologies such as AI can be thoughtfully incorporated into product workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Discovery & Research
- Research and analyze new feature opportunities and enhancements to existing EMR functionality
- Gather input from internal stakeholders (product, engineering, clinical, operations, compliance)
- Review regulatory, workflow, and customer-driven requirements relevant to EMR systems
- Analyze current-state workflows and identify gaps or improvement opportunities
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Facilitate discovery sessions, interviews, and requirements workshops
- Present findings, trade-offs, and recommendations to product and engineering leadership
- Act as a liaison between business, clinical, and technical teams
Requirements & Documentation
- Draft clear, structured requirements documents (BRDs, FRDs, or lean equivalents)
- Author user stories with acceptance criteria suitable for agile development teams
- Define functional and non-functional requirements, assumptions, constraints, and dependencies
- Support backlog refinement and sprint planning by clarifying intent and scope
Product & Delivery Support
- Collaborate with Product Managers to ensure requirements align with product strategy
- Support QA and UAT by clarifying expected behavior and edge cases
- Assist in evaluating delivered features against original requirements
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Product Analyst, or similar role OR a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or a related field combined with a relevant internship, co-op, or hands-on project experience in business analysis, product development, or software delivery
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work, and move initiatives forward without always requiring detailed instructions
- Comfort operating in a startup or fast-changing environment where processes may evolve and ambiguity is common
- Strong proficiency in requirements gathering, documentation, and user story creation
- Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to define meaningful KPIs, success metrics, and outcome measures for new features, and to outline approaches for ongoing monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of those metrics over time
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with EMR/EHR systems, healthcare IT, or clinical workflows
- Knowledge of long-term care, skilled nursing, or ambulatory healthcare settings
- Familiarity with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA, audit requirements)
- Experience using tools such as:
- Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar backlog management tools
- Confluence, SharePoint, or comparable documentation platforms
- SQL, Power BI, Excel
- Background working closely with clinicians, nurses, or healthcare administrators
- Experience or working knowledge of leveraging AI/ML tools or platforms to improve workflows, decision-making, or product capabilities, including helping to define or support AI-driven processes or features
What Success Looks Like in This Role
- Stakeholders feel heard and aligned on feature intent
- Engineering teams receive clear, testable, and well-scoped requirements
- User stories reduce rework and ambiguity during development
- New features and enhancements meet real user and workflow needs
- Documentation remains accurate, discoverable, and up to date
What We’re Looking For
- A self-starter who takes initiative and follows problems through to solutions
- Someone who asks the right questions, connects dots, and proposes ideas - not just documents requirements
- A candidate who is adaptable, resourceful, and energized by building and improving products from the ground up
- An individual who can balance structure and flexibility while supporting rapid product iteration
Requirements to Apply
To help evaluate candidates we are requiring potential candidates who wish to apply to complete two tasks before receiving a scheduled interview.
- Pick a feature from any software/application that you use and write technical documentation for a single feature within the application.
- Imagine a feature that you wish an application had and write basic documentation for how the feature should be implemented. Bonus points if the feature includes a 3rd party integration.
