Role Description The Communications Business Manager oversees all communications installation work, including structured cabling, data networks, fiber optics, security systems, and other low‑voltage infrastructure. The role provides technical oversight, workflow coordination, and operational leadership to ensure installations are accurate, efficient, compliant, and aligned with client expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Contract and Scope Management
- Review drawings, specifications, and scope documents for accuracy.
- Clarify requirements with general contractors and clients.
- Ensure installations meet industry standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Confirm documentation requirements such as as‑builts, test results, labeling, and certifications.
Planning and Scheduling
- Plan manpower, materials, and equipment for communications work.
- Monitor field progress and resolve technical or logistical issues.
- Coordinate with electrical teams to align communications work with overall project workflows.
- Remove constraints by confirming access, materials, equipment, and required information.
Procurement and Information Control
- Track material usage, vendor performance, and product suitability.
- Maintain accurate documentation (test results, certifications, labeling).
- Ensure information sent to the field is approved, current, and complete.
Site Logistics Coordination
- Conduct site visits to verify installation quality and resolve technical challenges.
- Confirm staging, laydown, and access plans support safe and efficient work.
- Coordinate with electrical and GC teams to ensure clean starts and smooth workflows.
Safety Leadership and Accountability
- Ensure communications work follows safety standards, electrical code, and company policies.
- Collaborate with the Safety Advisor on hazards, safe work practices, and job‑specific risks.
- Maintain compliance with testing, certification, and inspection requirements.
- Verify incidents and near misses are reported and corrective actions implemented.
Financial and Change Management
- Track labor efficiency, material usage, and division profitability.
- Support leadership with forecasting and strategic planning.
- Identify opportunities for growth in communications services and emerging technologies.
- Manage vendor relationships and evaluate product value and performance.
Commissioning and Closeout
- Ensure documentation (as‑builts, test results, labeling, certifications) is accurate and delivered on time.
- Confirm testing, certification, and inspection requirements are met.
- Support client handover by ensuring clarity of system functionality and installation quality.
Team and Stakeholder Leadership
- Provide mentorship and technical development for technicians and apprentices.
- Promote quality workmanship, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure clear communication between office and field teams.
- Build trust with clients, IT teams, consultants, and general contractors.
Qualifications
- 5+ years in communications/low‑voltage installations.
- Strong understanding of standards, best practices, and installation methods.
- Experience managing crews or a communications division.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and network diagrams.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with clients, GCs, and internal teams.
- Fiber optic or manufacturer‑specific certifications are an asset.
