Reporting to the Manager, Generation Forecasting & Resource Adequacy, we are looking for a Market Fundamentals Analyst for an 18-month term. You will support forecasting and market analysis initiatives that inform Alberta’s evolving electricity market. You contribute to market assessments, forecasting, simulation modeling, and resource adequacy analysis to support market design initiatives, grid reliability, and strategic decision-making.
Working closely with the Generation Forecasting team and stakeholders across the AESO, you will research industry trends, develop market outlooks and reports, perform market simulations and financial analyses, and provide data-driven insights to support forecasting activities and business priorities. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Support the development of the Long-Term Outlook, market assessments, and ad hoc analyses using production cost, resource adequacy, and market simulation models.
- Prepare analytics and insights to support Alberta's evolving electricity market and transmission planning frameworks.
- Contribute to the delivery of forecasting and analysis for internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyze and provide insights on Alberta and interconnected electricity markets, including related commodity markets.
- Research industry trends and emerging market developments.
- Support data collection, analysis, and reporting initiatives for a variety of stakeholders.
- Assist in the development of presentations, reports, briefing notes, and stakeholder materials.
- Document methodologies, assumptions, processes, and customer requirements.
- Identify and support process improvements to enhance forecasting and analytical capabilities.
- Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, while fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and teamwork.
What you’ll bring to us:
- Undergraduate degree in Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Business, or a related field; a graduate degree is considered an asset.
- 2-5 years of experience in energy market forecasting, analysis, or a related field.
- Power systems operations and electricity market understanding.
- Experience coding Restructured Energy Market (REM) models, Optimal Transmission Planning models, and locational marginal pricing models is an asset.
- Generation financial modeling experience and business development experience is an asset.
- Experience in commodity markets (i.e., electricity, natural gas, oil) in a forecasting or commercial capacity is an asset.
- Modelling experience incorporating spreadsheets, databases, statistical software and programming languages is an asset; experience with production cost model simulation software is an asset.
