About The Role
The Estimator/Applications Engineer position is a vital role within Powell Industries' Electrical Division in Edmonton. Reporting directly to the Estimating Supervisor within the Sales & Estimating department, this role is responsible for preparing competitive technical proposals and precise cost estimates for switchgear and electrical building projects. The successful candidate will serve as a technical and commercial resource, supporting sales initiatives and project execution. Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical Engineering or a C.E.T. designation from an accredited technical institute, college, or university.
- Valid Journeyman Ticket is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Metal Building Systems and Electrical Switchgear is advantageous.
- 1-3 years of experience in estimating or a related role is preferred.
- Experience working with vendors and components for commercial and industrial power distribution, motor controls, process control, and lighting projects.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and advanced Excel skills are highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of local electrical codes such as the Canadian Electrical Code and National Building Code.
- Knowledge of cost estimating concepts, techniques, and workflows, including documentation and version control of estimate input data.
Responsibilities
- Review customer project documentation, including specifications, data sheets, and drawings, to fully understand technical and commercial requirements.
- Develop detailed and comprehensive proposals that accurately reflect project needs while ensuring compliance with customer specifications, industry standards, and local codes.
- Communicate Powell's compliance status through clear comments and exceptions within proposals.
- Create Basis of Estimate and Basis of Schedule documents to accompany each proposal, providing transparency and clarity.
- Provide technical leadership and support to sales teams and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Collaborate with project teams to utilize estimating tools and processes, ensuring the accuracy and competitiveness of proposals.
- Prepare and deliver proposal overviews to clients and internal teams as needed.
- Analyze product-specific cost data, utilizing statistical tools and performance metrics to refine estimates.
- Work closely with manufacturing, engineering, and operations departments to incorporate accurate labor and material forecasting factors into pricing models.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
