Company Description Algoma Family Services Foundation is the only foundation is dedicated to supporting children and youth with mental health challenges and their families across the Algoma region. It advances the mission of Algoma Family Services by raising funds for programs and services that are not fully supported through provincial funding. The Foundation promotes community awareness of the specific mental health needs of children and youth, and the services available to assist them. It engages in community-based fundraising initiatives and ensures strong stewardship and responsible management of all entrusted funds. Board members help strengthen this impact by guiding strategy, governance, and community relationships.
Role Description This is a volunteer role where the board member can be located anywhere within the Algoma Region. Board Members participate in monthly board and committee meetings, review materials in advance, and contribute to informed decision-making on governance, strategy, and financial stewardship. They help shape fundraising priorities, support donor and community engagement activities, and act as ambassadors for the Foundation within their community. Board Members collaborate with fellow directors and staff to ensure programs and initiatives align with the mission and serve the best interests of children, youth, and families. The role involves ethical oversight, risk awareness, and a commitment to maintaining the Foundation’s reputation and community trust.
Qualifications
- Professional background in law, accounting, insurance or investments.
- Ability to contribute to governance, strategic planning, and oversight of policies and organizational direction.
- Experience or strong interest in fundraising, donor relations, and community engagement initiatives.
- Comfort with reviewing financial reports and budgets, and supporting responsible stewardship of funds.
- Commitment to child and youth mental health, with a values-driven, inclusive, and non-discriminatory approach.
- Willingness to prepare for and attend regular board and committee meetings in person in Sault Ste. Marie or virtually.
- Prior board, nonprofit, or community leadership experience is an asset but not required.
