Project Context
The Human Factors Engineering Consultant will support the development and integration activities for a rail transit signaling and train control system. The consultant will provide independent Human Factors Engineering expertise to assess and improve human-system interactions impacting train operators, control center operators, maintainers, trainers, and other users. This role involves supporting design reviews, safety assessments, and customer submissions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review project requirements, technical specifications, existing baseline documentation, schedules, and design maturity.
- Perform Human Factors analyses, including task analysis, workload assessment, situation awareness, human error assessment, and operational scenario evaluations.
- Review ATS HMI, control center workstations, mimic displays, operator interfaces, and onboard control panels.
- Assess normal, degraded, maintenance, emergency, rescue, and operational recovery scenarios.
- Support hazard analysis activities and provide Human Factors Engineering input to PHA, SHA, IHA, O&SHA, and hazard logs.
- Review training simulators, procedures, manuals, and operational documentation.
- Develop Human Factors Engineering compliance matrices, recommendations registers, assessment reports, and verification evidence.
- Participate in technical workshops, design reviews (PDR, IDR, FDR, IOMR), safety reviews, and customer comment resolution meetings.
Candidate Requirements :
- Minimum 8 years of Human Factors Engineering or ergonomics experience within safety-critical systems.
- Rail transit experience, preferably involving CBTC, ATS, OCC/BOCC, train operator displays, signaling, or integrated control systems.
- Experience in task analysis, workload assessment, human reliability, alarm management, situation awareness, and HMI evaluation.
- Experience supporting engineering design reviews, safety reviews, and engineering deliverables.
- Ability to work within requirements-management and controlled-document environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to facilitate multidisciplinary technical workshops.
- Ability to provide structured recommendations and technical assessments.
- Ability to interact with multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholders.

In accordance with our compensation practices, ALTEN is providing the salary range associated with this opportunity. Final compensation will be determined after considering several factors, including professional experience, skill set, educational background, certifications, and geographic market conditions. The current target salary range for this role is $75,000 – $105,000 per year.
