Avison Management Services Ltd., a member of the McTavish Resource & Management Consultants Ltd group of companies, is a well-established Environment and Forestry Consulting Company with operations across BC. We are currently seeking an Intermediate Registered Professional Biologist to join our team.
Job Description
The Intermediate Project Biologist will support and independently execute various field and office components of small- and large-scale environmental projects in forestry, utility, oil and gas, mining and government. The Biologist will work with Project Managers and Environmental Specialists to lead and support technical components of project delivery.
Key Role Functions & Responsibilities
Key duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Hold technical responsibility and ownership for data management, technical quality and execution, and general oversight of project field programs.
- Supervise and be accountable for the execution of environmental surveys (e.g. breeding birds, sensitive raptors, terrestrial wildlife, aquatics, fish and fish habitat inventory and vegetation). This includes providing survey kick-offs, coordination of data entry, and providing guidance to junior field biologists and other staff.
- Assist with and independently lead the design, planning and execution of ecological studies focused on fisheries and aquatic resources, water quality, wildlife, vegetation, and other environmental information.
- Act as a Qualified Environmental Professional for various projects.
- Provide peer review and mentorship to junior biologists and
- Support Project Managers and clients with expertise in project surveys, data collection, analysis, and regulatory impacts.
- Provide support on project and task management to maintain deliverable accountability, and client relationship/satisfaction.
- Independently prepare, coordinate and/or review technical reports and permit applications associated with regulatory approvals and/or compliance requirements.
- Complete estimates and technical content for proposals; Support budget tracking/management as directed.
- Act as Lead Environmental Monitor on construction projects, including instream works and works in other sensitive environments.
- Expand project opportunities through successful funding applications and develop and maintain client relationships.
Job Requirements
- Science degree or diploma from a recognized university of college.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a small to medium professional environmental consulting environment
- Registered with the BC College of Applied Biologists as a Registered Professional Biologist
- Demonstrated experience in independently executing and leading field-based environmental consulting services.
- Ability to work long hours (e.g.,10 to 14-hour shifts) and on weekends, subject to overtime pay in accordance with BC Labour Law
- Ability to travel for work throughout BC, and out of province as needed.
- Ability to work and stay in remote camp settings
- Experience working with ATVs, UTVs and/or snowmobiles is an asset
- Positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel etc.).
- Experience with GIS (ArcPro and/or QGIS) is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License with clean driving record.
- Able to complete a Drug & Alcohol test to meet specific client requirements, as required
