About Backwoods Group Backwoods Group (“Backwoods”) is proudly 100% owned by the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation (“ANSN”). We operate to drive Indigenous prosperity from within. But what defines us isn’t ownership alone; it’s how we honour our past while building a stronger future. From construction and environmental services to security and access matting, we deliver our own work not through layers of subcontracting but through hands-on leadership, built and staffed by Indigenous-inclusive crews across our seven divisions. In the early 2000s, Backwoods began to diversify into other forestry-related services and transitioned focus to the energy industry in Northwestern Alberta. The Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation (ANSN) acquired 100% ownership in Backwoods Energy Services in 2021.
