Original job description
We're a pre-Series A startup - profitable, backed by Sequoia and Lightspeed, at a $100M+ valuation - building software for real small-business customers: a marketing suite, booking & payments, invoicing, analytics, and integrations. You'd join a small engineering team (5–7 engineers) working directly with the CTO. This is not a typical junior role - please read carefully.
What the work actually is. You'll build features primarily by directing AI coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex) on a modern stack: React, Next.js, TypeScript, Node/Express, Postgres. The agent writes most of the code. Your job is to drive it, catch it when it's wrong, make sure what it builds actually makes sense, and own the outcome. We care far more about effort, judgment, and reliability than years of experience or algorithms memorized.
What you'll do:
Help ship features end-to-end - data → APIs → polished UI - with heavy use of AI assistants
Translate clear briefs into working software against an existing design system
Catch and refine what the AI produces: debug and improve, not paste-and-pray
Respond fast to feedback and iterate
What we're looking for:
Genuinely hungry, want to grow fast at a startup
Hands-on experience building and shipping with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) - you've driven these tools on real projects, not just tried them once
Enough familiarity with web development (React/TypeScript a plus) to read code and tell when something's off - even if you couldn't write it from scratch
Crisp written communication and an ownership mindset
How we work:
Weekly product demos, syncs only when they add value
Direct, written-first communication; open in public channels
High-intensity, full-time environment with periodic launch pushes
The honest terms:
Full-time and exclusive - this is your only job.
Expect 50–60 hours/week.
Mostly remote, with up to 3 months per year of in-person collaboration in Toronto. (flights paid by company if required)
While remote, you need to be working throughout US Eastern business hours so you're collaborating with the team in real time. Because this is a 50–60 hour week, you'll regularly work well beyond that window too - this isn't a fixed 9-to-5. The Eastern overlap is the hard requirement; the additional hours come with an early-stage build. (Effectively the Americas or nearby time zones.)
Compensation: $60K - $90K CAD, paid as an international contractor.
Benefits:
~10 paid fixed-date holidays/year + 3 weeks additional paid time off
Company-sponsored health insurance (US/Canada)
If a high-effort, full-commitment role at a fast, profitable startup excites you, apply. If you're looking for a low-intensity role or a side gig, this isn't it - and that's okay.
