ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Black & McDonald’s Facility Management & Operations team is expanding! We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Facility Supervisor to join our team at the National Gallery of Canada, one of Canada’s most iconic cultural institutions.
This is an exciting opportunity to help lead the operation and maintenance of a complex, mission-critical facility that houses nationally significant artwork and relies on sophisticated environmental control systems to preserve and protect its collections. The successful candidate will be a hands-on operational leader responsible for client relationship management, technical troubleshooting, staff supervision, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and service delivery.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Address technical / operating issues in the most efficient manner.
- Make recommendations on strategic initiatives, which could include cost saving measures or enhancements to the services or systems.
- Supervise and provide direction to staff and subcontractors.
- Ensure subcontractors are qualified and accredited/certified as required for the work.
- Prepare and write reports and lead NGC client meetings.
- Manage employee schedules, vacation planning, and daily work assignments.
- Deliver hands-on technical leadership and actively participate in troubleshooting building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, BAS/DDC, lighting control, and emergency power systems.
- Review building alarms, trends, and system performance and make operational adjustments as required.
- Promote and enforce Black & McDonald’s health, safety and environmental programs through inspections, hazard assessments, safety meetings, and compliance activities.
COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
- Post-secondary diploma in a related technical discipline or a recognized trade certification in a building systems field.
- Minimum 10 years of building operations and maintenance experience within commercial, institutional, industrial, or special-purpose facilities.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience supporting multidisciplinary maintenance teams.
- Ability to organize work in an efficient and reliable manner.
- Good problem solving and leadership skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, client relationship, and leadership skills.
- Strong commitment to health, safety, and continuous improvement.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Good working knowledge of:
- HVAC equipment and systems.
- Electrical systems.
- Plumbing systems.
- Building controls systems.
- Instrumentation and documentation related to Direct Digital Building Controls (DDC) and programming preferably with VCI Controls system of Bacnet generation.
- Mechanical equipment troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Applicable building codes, safety regulations, ASHRAE standards, etc. (NBC, NEC, CLC, NFC, OSHA, WHMIS).
- Environmental issues, proper use and disposal of products, health related situations such as molds and bacterium.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Proficiency in one official language and working knowledge of second official language (English and French).
- Able to read and understand building plans/drawings.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office related applications.
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic certification is strongly preferred.
- Candidates possessing a Stationary Engineer certification with extensive mechanical systems experience and demonstrated troubleshooting capability will also be considered.
The expected salary range for this role is $75,000 - $85,000 per year. The starting salary will be determined based on several factors such as the successful candidate’s qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Base pay is one component of Black & McDonald’s total rewards package. Total rewards vary by position and may include additional offerings such as group insurance benefits, pension plan, annual discretionary bonus, career development programs, and other HR programs.
