The successful candidate for the Senior Manager, Maintenance & Tooling position will provide strategic direction and leadership for the Maintenance & Tooling function, overseeing the development, construction, maintenance, and continuous improvement of tools, fixtures, machinery, equipment, and building infrastructure at our manufacturing facility in Etobicoke, Ontario.
The role is responsible for ensuring the availability, reliability, and efficiency of manufacturing equipment and tooling while supporting production requirements, new product launches, and continuous improvement initiatives. This includes overseeing the mechanical and electrical maintenance of machinery and facility infrastructure, as well as the planning and execution of preventive maintenance programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic direction, leadership, and oversight of the Maintenance & Tooling function, including direct leadership of the Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Planner, and Mechatronics Technologist.
- Lead, develop, and support the Maintenance & Tooling team, including workforce planning, performance management, training, scheduling, and the effective allocation of resources.
- Oversee the construction, development, modification, installation, and commissioning of machines, tools, fixtures, and specialized equipment to support manufacturing requirements and new product launches.
- Ensure that tools, fixtures, machinery, and equipment required for new products and production programs are available on time and meet operational and performance requirements.
- Oversee the mechanical and electrical maintenance of manufacturing machinery, technical equipment, building systems, and facility infrastructure.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment reliability, efficiency, and useful life.
- Ensure that defective machinery, equipment, systems, and building infrastructure are repaired promptly and effectively to minimize production disruption and downtime.
- Monitor equipment performance and maintenance activities, using data and key performance indicators to identify trends, prioritize actions, and drive continuous improvement.
- Identify and implement engineering changes, equipment modifications, and process improvements to increase efficiency, improve reliability, and reduce operating and maintenance costs.
- Ensure the effective and efficient use of maintenance resources, materials, equipment, spare parts, and external service providers.
- Manage the departmental maintenance budget, including forecasting, expenditure tracking, purchasing, and cost control.
- Oversee the procurement and inventory management of equipment, replacement parts, tools, and maintenance supplies, ensuring appropriate availability while maintaining cost effectiveness.
- Source, select, and manage external contractors and service providers, ensuring compliance with company requirements and applicable legislation. Review quotations and oversee contractor projects through completion.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislative and regulatory requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and other applicable requirements.
- Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture within the Maintenance & Tooling function and ensure employees and contractors adhere to company safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with the applicable collective agreement, company policies, and employment legislation, while maintaining positive and cooperative labour relations.
- Support Production and other departments by providing timely technical expertise and coordinating maintenance activities, equipment requirements, and production-related priorities.
- Participate in and lead continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, equipment reliability, quality, and cost effectiveness.
- Prepare and analyze maintenance reports, budgets, performance metrics, and other operational data to support decision-making and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain accurate plant equipment and layout information, ensuring records are kept current as changes are made.
- Participate in daily production and operational meetings to address maintenance concerns, coordinate priorities, and plan upcoming projects.
- Ensure that maintenance employees receive appropriate technical training, orientation, and development to support safe and effective job performance.
- Support special projects, emergency requirements, or operational coverage outside of standard working hours when required.
Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline; equivalent technical experience may be considered.
- 5 -10+ years of progressive experience in maintenance, tooling, engineering, or technical operations within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- 5+ years of leadership or supervisory experience, preferably managing maintenance and/or technical teams in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience developing, implementing, and managing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, manufacturing equipment, and facility infrastructure.
- Experience with CNC machinery, boilers, chillers, and industrial manufacturing equipment.
- Working knowledge of tool room machinery, including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and related equipment.
- Experience with maintenance management systems/CMMS, maintenance reporting, and performance metrics.
- Experience managing departmental budgets, purchasing, contractors, and maintenance inventories.
- Strong knowledge of applicable Ontario health and safety legislation, electrical safety requirements, and other regulatory standards.
- Experience working within a unionized manufacturing environment and collective agreement is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, solve complex technical problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
