About the role
Brilliant Game Studios is a privately owned, independent video game studio in the Vancouver area. We're a small, tight-knit team that cares about craft, smart systems, and making games people want to sink hours into.
We're looking for an Environment/Level Designer to join the studio on-site and help build the worlds players explore. You'll own environments from blockout to final polish in Unity, working closely with design and engineering so every space looks great, plays well, and runs smoothly. In a team our size, your work shows up on screen fast, and your ideas matter.
We're a very small studio, so everyone wears multiple hats. Beyond your core role, you'll be expected to take ownership of whatever the game needs, from playtesting and bug reporting to community management and more. If you like variety and want real responsibility, you'll fit right in.
Total compensation
- Salary to commensurate with experience, starting $55k-$65k
- 2 weeks vacation plus additional paid time off (studio break during winter holidays)
- Team Games Night perks including PC video games, and team lunches
What you'll do
- Build game-ready worlds in Unity, including nature environments, cityscapes, and minor interior design, that match the game's art direction
- Design and iterate on level layouts, balancing exploration, flow, landmarks, and player readability
- Light, dress, and polish scenes so they look right in play, not just in the viewport
- Keep worlds within performance budgets (poly counts, texture memory, draw calls) and fix issues found in testing
- Work extensively in Unity, including Unity Terrain resources and systems
- Collaborate daily with designers and programmers on gameplay spaces, navigation, and world systems
- Give and take feedback in reviews and iterate quickly
- Help maintain naming conventions, prefab organization, and pipeline documentation
What you bring
Required
- A portfolio of game-ready world and environment work, with breakdowns or in-engine shots
- Extensive knowledge of the Unity engine, including scene building, prefabs, lighting, terrain, render pipelines, and performance profiling
- Experience building nature environments, cityscapes, and minor interior spaces
- Solid understanding of real-time art: modular design, trim sheets, tiling textures, PBR, and optimization
- Level design experience, and an eye for how players move through a space
- Comfortable working independently in a small team and owning your work end to end
- Clear communicator who takes feedback well
Nice to have
- Environment and prop modeling
- Strong skills in tools such as Blender or Maya, Substance Painter/Designer, and Photoshop
- Experience working with custom in-house tools, and comfort learning the ones our team develops
- Experience on survival, crafting, or open-world games
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in game art, level design, or a related field
