Position: Senior Ground Control Engineer
Location: Voisey Bay, Labrador (Canada)
Schedule: The role operates on a 2-week on / 2-week off fly-in fly-out schedule, with relocation to Newfoundland and Labrador required.
Introduction
Brunel is currently seeking a Senior Ground Control Engineer to join a major mining operation in Voisey’s Bay, Labrador. This is a permanent, site-based position supporting both open pit and underground operations within a technically complex and safety-critical environment.
As a Senior Ground Control Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and support for the development and execution of ground control and geomechanical programs. You will play a key role in ensuring safe, reliable production through effective risk management, planning alignment, and continuous improvement across both short- and long-term mining activities.
Responsibilities
- Support execution and continuous improvement of site-specific Ground Control Management Plans across open pit and underground operations
- Lead geomechanically risk assessments for Life of Mine (LOM) plans and annual mine plans, ensuring optimized mining sequences and layouts
- Develop and maintain ground control, seismic, and stability risk management plans in alignment with operational and regulatory requirements
- Provide technical recommendations to ensure stability and safety of pit walls and underground excavations, including ground support design and optimization
- Participate in audits and reviews (e.g., seismic and geotechnical assessments) and develop action plans to address findings
- Respond to ground control issues and incidents, leading investigations and implementing corrective actions to mitigate future risks
- Monitor and verify ground support and installation quality through QA/QC processes in underground operations
- Install and maintain ground movement and seismic monitoring instrumentation programs
- Coordinate with Mine Operations and Mine Planning teams to align short- and long-term ground control strategies
- Develop and deliver ground control hazard awareness training for site personnel
- Lead or contribute to investigations of major ground instability events and support continuous improvement initiatives
Requirements
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mining preferred or related discipline)
- Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng) required
- Minimum 4+ years of experience in an underground mining environment
- Strong technical understanding of ground control and geomechanics principles
- Experience with ground control software applications (Deswik experience considered an asset)
- Proven ability to assess risk, manage complexity, and support operational decision-making
- Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work in a site-based, fly-in fly-out environment and adapt to changing operational priorities
