Position Overview
Successful candidates will be responsible for translating technical system specifications into functional, reliable, and tested applications. The role will involve programming, application testing, debugging, database development, technical troubleshooting, implementation support, and migration/conversion activities.
Candidates should be comfortable collaborating with IT professionals, business stakeholders, and subject matter experts throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
Key Responsibilities
- Translate technical systems specifications and business requirements into working, tested applications.
- Develop detailed programming and technical specifications.
- Write, generate, compile, maintain, and test application code.
- Conduct unit testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of applications.
- Analyze and resolve technical issues arising during application development, implementation, and operation.
- Provide technical support during application implementation, conversion, and migration activities.
- Participate throughout the Software Development Life Cycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Design, develop, test, debug, document, and maintain software applications.
- Collaborate with IT professionals, business stakeholders, and subject matter experts to understand and document requirements.
- Support application deployment and post-implementation activities.
- Investigate and resolve post-implementation technical issues.
- Participate in technical and design walkthroughs with project teams.
- Prepare and maintain user, technical, and system documentation.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve technical problems while meeting project timelines and quality expectations.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in software programming, application development, and technical analysis.
- Experience supporting specialized software packages and applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with IT professionals throughout the SDLC.
- Experience with structured methodologies for application development, design, implementation, and maintenance.
- Hands-on experience designing, coding, testing, debugging, and documenting applications.
- Experience using object-oriented and/or third-generation programming languages and development tools.
- Experience with one or more programming languages.
- Knowledge and experience in application design, development patterns, deployment, and troubleshooting.
- Experience working with relational and/or hierarchical database technologies.
- Experience using query languages and information retrieval tools.
- Experience with one or more communications protocols.
- Experience gathering, eliciting, analyzing, and documenting requirements from diverse business stakeholders and subject matter experts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and meet project deadlines.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience developing Internet-ready or web-based applications.
- Knowledge and experience with Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodologies.
- Knowledge of Information Management principles, concepts, policies, and practices.
- Experience working with middleware and gateways.
- Experience reviewing, analyzing, and modifying product installation scripts, including encoding, testing, and debugging.
- Experience providing post-implementation application support and resolving technical issues.
- Experience conducting technical/design walkthroughs with project teams.
- Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and related accessibility regulations and standards.
- Ability to prepare and maintain user and system documentation.
