The ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA) is the official steward of Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market District and two iconic public markets.

Working in partnership with the City of Ottawa, local businesses, vendors, community organizations, and public agencies, the BMDA leads the coordinated stewardship, placemaking, and strategic growth of one of Canada’s oldest and most visited destinations.

Our mandate spans public realm management, year-round programming, district animation, economic vitality, and long-term resilience. We curate and produce signature events, support community-led activations, and enhance the visitor experience through thoughtful programming that strengthens the district’s identity and relevance.

As stewards of both historic public markets, we support local entrepreneurs, producers, farmers, artisans, and small businesses while ensuring the operational excellence and sustainability of these vital civic assets.

Beyond events and programming, our work includes strategic partnerships, public space improvements, safety and community well-being initiatives, and collaborative planning that positions the ByWard Market District for long-term success.
