Cost Superintendent (Operations and Projects)
Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc. | St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador
Employment: Full-time
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
Location: On site at the St. Lawrence mine site
About the Opportunity
Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc. is seeking an experienced Cost Superintendent to lead cost management and production reconciliation across our mining operation, mineral processing, aggregates, logistics, port operations and capital projects.
This role connects operational performance with financial reporting. You will establish reliable unit costs, reconcile production from mine plan to shipped product, develop consumption standards and verify contractor claims. Working closely with Finance, Mining, Metallurgy, Engineering, Procurement and departmental managers, you will provide accurate information to support operational and financial decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Management and Analysis
- Maintain a cost model covering each stage of the operation, using clearly defined activity drivers and measurement bases.
- Establish and maintain standard costs, absorption rates, fixed and variable cost allocations, and product break-even analysis.
- Benchmark unit costs and consumption against budgets, previous periods, design criteria and industry references.
- Prepare weekly cost and production dashboards and monthly variance reports that explain price, volume, mix, yield, efficiency and usage differences.
- Support operating budgets and forecasts with Finance and departmental managers.
Production Accounting and Reconciliation
- Reconcile production from mine plan and grade control through mined tonnes, stockpiles, plant feed, processing stages, dispatch, port inventories and shipped product.
- Investigate differences in tonnage, grade, moisture, recovery, inventory and shipping measurements.
- Align production records with the general ledger, physical counts, surveys and financial reporting cut-offs.
- Prepare the monthly production statement for joint sign-off with Metallurgy and Mining.
Bills of Material and Consumption Standards
- Develop and maintain bills of material and processing routings by ore type, blend and campaign.
- Establish consumption standards for processing media, reagents, wear components, power, diesel and water.
- Maintain documented approval and change control processes for standards.
- Maintain ERP costing structures, reconcile recorded consumption to physical issues, and report usage variances separately from price variances.
Contractor Claims and Commercial Controls
- Verify mining, haulage, port and major service provider claims against contract terms, rate schedules and independently measured production.
- Review payment mechanisms, including standing time, availability, utilization, fuel adjustments and escalation provisions.
- Assess variations and claims before accrual or payment.
- Reconcile certified claims to accruals and remaining commitments, and maintain claims and disputes records.
Inventory and Capital Project Cost Control
- Support accurate valuation of stockpiles, in-process material, in-transit inventory and port stock.
- Assess net realizable value and apply approved product cost allocation methods.
- Monitor capital project commitments, forecast final costs, changes, contingency usage and cash flow.
- Support capital versus operating cost classification, project close-out and capitalization documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in commerce, accounting or a related discipline, or an equivalent college diploma with relevant experience.
- CPA designation, advanced CPA candidacy, or a recognized management accounting designation such as CIMA or legacy CMA. Equivalent demonstrated cost management experience will be considered.
- At least five years of cost or management accounting experience, including three years in mining, quarrying or mineral processing with direct plant exposure.
- Demonstrated production or metal accounting experience, including reconciliation from mine plan to shipped product and estimation of in-process inventory.
- Experience developing bills of material and consumption standards from first principles. Candidates will be expected to present a worked example during the selection process.
- Experience verifying contractor claims and controlling project costs using authorizations for expenditure.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with ERP costing and bill of material modules.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Experience with Power BI, SQL, weighbridge systems, laboratory systems, fleet management systems or mass balance tools is an asset.
What You Bring
You are analytical, thorough and comfortable working directly with operational teams. You investigate discrepancies, follow variances through to their root cause and communicate findings clearly.
You bring sound commercial judgment, a practical understanding of mineral processing and the confidence to support your conclusions with evidence. Integrity, accurate reporting and effective working relationships are essential to success in this role.
